Tight Mouth Dogs

Hey fellas Spike is tight on the ground and independant.
Talked to several that say ,i can do some winning with him.
Never hunted a tight mouth hound. How is a man gonna win with a dog that dont get much strike.Serious answers please.

Todd ive won with some tight mouth dogs an got beat by some tight mouth dogs, but they split most the time an were real accurate. Myself i prefer a open mouth dog. To me it seems hard to win consistanly takeing 3rd an 4th strike position all the time.

Did it with Trusty...third in most casts sitting by himself with mr Rickey. If he packs a lot you can't win though....be a better ukc than pkc dog because of the tree point diff. They also have to hustle to win. Most casts you have to tree two to their one...good luck.. Also look at what's won big hunts.. Clayton won the nationals very tight mouth. Awesome won the world. Silent. Has to hustle and be very independant and bank on a coon when you get there. If he packs or misses a lot you can't win...

Looks like he is gonna be real accurate. He gets to himself real well.
I have not got to hunt him in thick coon .I would like to see.him in em thick.
He is still does puppy stuff
Im liking hunting one tight mouth,it is a different experience.
I was.just curious to how a tight mouth dog wins.

And may I ad,,when a dog is independent,,it takes a lot of presure off the handler trying to tree his dog in a pack ,,jockeying for 1st tree,,and you can a lot of times get the pack hounds leash locked with a independent hound.

Silent to semi silent dog will tree more coons usually cause they will run right up on them sometimes. Esp, if they are hustling.

Why's that KT?

I mean if you have one that blows wild in the country and gets treed and you tree him quickly and your sitting with 50 and 100 in PKC then the count down will help you. But if a 100 strike dog gets 75 tree everytime your beat..

UKC if you have 50/125 you got 175 and that 100 strike dog can;t beat you even at 4 minutes and 59 seconds for 75 tree. . .

Just curious as to what was your thoughts KT?

Gene, in most PKC casts 100 is only open for the 1st drop, after that you are recasting for 25 all night. Also, if a dog trails silently away from the others and gets treed the countdown comes into effect and negates the point difference on tree in UKC.

Gene, I agree with KT and Kenny. Kenny give the prime example. In PKC they don't call time out and move much if at all, so there isn't many 1st strikes, your recasting for 25 and in that case the dog that is semi silent or silent has a better chance in PKC.
Thats why a lot of guys that PKC want the right and tight type of dogs as it is has been stated on that site.

Todd - Let me ask you this. If you love the sound of the chase do you want to hunt a dog that that only shows you the end results or one that shows you the end results AND how you got there?

Hunted with a friend who had a stone cold silent walker that would get deeeeppppp. You want to talk about a pain to keep up with with a beep beep. Probably wouldn't be so bad with a Garmin. Back then I hated that sucker even if he was a coon treeing machine.

GRNITECH GRCH 'PR' Noll's black bottom zip was tight on track. Not silent. I still have four of her pups that are a little tight on track and enjoy hunting all of them. One was in 11 shows and 14 hunts is dual grand. One was purchesed back at 17 months an was dual grand at 27 months, I think he was king of hunt at 5 or maybe 6 B & T sectionals last year. One is CRCH and made NITECH in three hunts. Had just bought her back and this was over a 30 or so day period. The other one was in 12 shows and five hunts he is GRCH and NITECH at 25 months. Other's also have titled dogs out of her and as far as I know they all enjoy hunting them.
This would be an evening conversation to discuss the pros and cons of competing with a tight mouthed dog that hunts and does not blow out of the county. Not a quick answer on the message board. But I would say hunt him and enjoy the 300 to 700 yard trees instead of the 900 yard to 1.2 ,mile trees. Make your decsion after hunting him for awhile.

I prefer a semi silent dog over a mouthy one even a good silent one is better then mouthy. Can a silent dog win here is your answer Todd
