last summer i got a 3 year old bluetick female the guy never really hunted her shes a good track dog but cant tree well any ideas on how to get her treeing?

Its in em or its not.. You can get em to stay, but you cant make em tree

Heres my opinion.... Seems alot of people dont want to trin their hound, but instead hope that their hound is just born with everything they need. yes it does help and it is awesome when they have a good genetic back ground and thei ancestory is right. but just because a dog doesnt tree on its own doesnt mean it cant be fixed! ur dog is gettin old enough where it could be a lil more difficult but what i would do is get a couple cage coons, let her fight them for a minute or two while still in the trap then raise them in a tree just outta there reach to where they will try to jump and grab it sooner or later they will tree if she starts to leave, lower the cage to get her attention, let her fight and bawl a minute or two and raise right out of her reach again. with enough time and EFFORT a light bulb will click in that dogs head and she wil put it together! hope this helps and good luck to ya i wouldnt give up yet!

also do not try to force her to tree< make a game out of it to where its fun for her and she wants to because she wants to not because u expect her to. Good luck!

KCH has the right idea. I have had a couple dogs like this. cage coon starts growling & snapping at them & the switch turned on !! became fun dogs to hunt with some work.

I would start the dog from scratch like it knew nothing...give it a fair chance...but at that age it wouldn't get long....


What separated tree hounds from the rest of the dogs in the world is the treeing instinct...they gotta tree their game and stay treed...

Any dog can track....tree dogs tree.

Its an instinct they either have or they don't...

Hounds worth my time don't need trained...they need shown what to hunt and they need hunted...they might need fine tuned...they will gain their confidence with time in the woods...but a hound gotta know how to look up the first time a coon goes up a tree IMO...

If you work a dog on a caged coon and then release it and let it climb and that dog don't go crazy trying to get that coon down chances are high that it just don't got it...so long as they are old enough and mature enough to be worked...


Can teach a dog lots of tricks.....but I haven't been able to teach one to tree...

My German Shepherd can sniff out anything I want...but he ain't a tree dog....

some dogs like people are slower than others when it comes to learning and acting on natural instinct. but i will say this....tree dogs are born not made. if your dog does not have the instinct to look up then it will be hard to create this in a dog. and bear in mind that not every pup out of every litter are born tree dogs no matter who the parents are. i use very little caged game after a couple sessions. i got a yard dog that will tree a cage coon, but that does not make her a track and tree dog.

only way youll know for sure is just hunt the hide off her,they either have treeing instinct or they dont,i dont think theres no tricks in getting a dog to tree its either in them or it aint.

I am FAR from an expert but I've had some good results making a lazy tree dog better by tying the dog back a few feet from the tree while other dogs are treeing hard then shooting the coon out to the other dogs and making her watch the other dogs get fur in their mouths. A few times doing this and they treed harder. The dogs this worked for did tree before this they were just loose on the tree and what I call lazy tree dogs. Barked some but weren't treeing hard or excited. If you don't want to shoot coons out or can't bc season is out try tying her back and petting praising the dogs that are on the tree. I'm just a pleasure hunter so never tied my dogs at the tree.

i get a kick out of those guys who kick, hiss, pat the tree, and dance a jig trying to get a dog excited enough to tree. i think the dog is barking at them because they acting a fool lol. or they even put the dogs feet on the tree lol that is good funny stuff there.

I watched a guy show one how to tree one night. He got down on his knees, hands up on the tree, head back and barked like a dog. Don't think he had much success but you might try it.

Put the hate in her...take you a live caged coon and put it in a bucket that has a hole in the bottom of it just big enough she can stick her nose in it...pull it upa tree and turn her a loose when she sticks her nose in the hole she will get hit on the nose. I've been given a lot of dogs that were called culls because the guys were used to these heavy tree bred dogs that slick as pups and didn't want to full with the real dogs that had it in them just wasnt heavy tree bred but bred just right....works every time but I will be honest and say three is the cut off age for me I like them between a year and two and a half if never fooled with or lightly started but give her a chance..try the bucket trick and hunt the piss out of her for three to four Months if she hasn't improved breed her to a stud that has a lot of tree in him and get a pup or make a pet out of her..
