Purina Active Life

Been feeding this to my pups for about 2 months now. It is 25%protein/16%fat. I can't remember for sure but isn't that close to what the old HiPro was?
Started feeding these two 7 month old pups the same amount as the last feed and in two weeks they were noticeably overweight. I cut back both by a cup a day and after two more weeks they are still heavier than I like in summer but about right for winter.
I know pups will fluctuate their weight faster than adult dogs but I was a little surprised that you could see so much difference varying the amount in just two weeks.
Anyway, they eat it good, although these two eat ANYTHING good, they look great and I think their coat is even better but that might just be my imagination. I think this new Purina agrees with my pup really well for the winter time, don't know if I'll stick with in July or not.
Just for comparison the prices for me are as follows;
Walmart-Purina Active Life Chow.....73 cents per pound.
Menards- Diamond EA......90 cents per pound.
Local dealer- Ultra Advantage 24/20........53 cents per pound.

I feed and love it, My hounds coats shine!! the black seems darker also. I dont remember what size bag it comes in, but I pay $24.88 for it at walmart.

Cleanup?

U getting much cleanup? That got me away from dog chow a yr ago.. Seems like it changed and was having alot of cleanup.. Seth

X 2. Love it. my 10 year old looks great. Plus my pup does to. A little heavy like you said but I much Rather have her heavy than skinny. A fat dog is a happy dog.

My dogs were on it almost exclusively in the 3 weeks or so before Grand American when I couldn't get home to buy EA from the feed store during deer season. Physically they looked great. Didn't look as "cut" on it as they do on EA, but they were in good shape. I'll probably keep using it as my "filler" if I run out of my regular food before I get home on the weekends. Dogs loved it. Only negative was there was a LOT more cleanup than I have when they're on the EA. Not loose stools, just more of it period.

I used dog chow mixed w P.One. I then tried the AL. I am still using it. $24.48/ 36#. there were $4 coupons on the bags so that helped. I had one dog that had loose stools when I had to feed AL solo. but mixing it all is well and same cleanup as DC/POne mix. I am mixing it w/ Proplan now. again, same cleanup, altho I have noticed a lot more water intake, not sure if feed or weather is the culprit there. I was told that some purina reps were notified that it was going to be d/c'd. I have asked Purina via FB 2x and both times assured it would not be d/c'd. its 25/18, sort of above dog chow and below POne. so far so good.

Cynthia, most of my dogs drink a good bit of water at all times, but I noticed they do seem to drink a bit more on AL. Not that it's a bad thing. I can say one thing...even my pickiest eaters will clean their bowl when they get AL!

Jen, mine do not seem to drink as much in the warmer weather as they do in the winter. thats why I dont know if its the feed or the weather w/ the increased water. I just started feeding AL about 2m ago.

UPDATE:

I have had trouble finding the 36# bags so I contacted Purina on FB last night and they gave me a phone number. I just called and was told that "due to a decrease in the demand for the 36# size it has been discontinued."

so, I guess all of the rumors about d/c the feed were not totally invalid. I did inform the girl that they did not have the feed out in that size across the country long enough to give it time to get a true sample of its popularity.

I also told her that once again Purina has shot itself in the foot by pulling another good food off the shelf that worked for the dogs and was affordable and that I would NOT be buying the smaller sizes at the increased prices.

UGH...when will they learn???

i fed Sport Mix 28&18 for years well it has gotten where it cost so much i tried a bag of retriver from TSC it is made by Purina for the TSC stores, it is the same as the old HI Pro it is 27 &15 at 19.99 for 50 pounds my dogs are gaining on it and i feed the same amount as i did before, no different in clean up , a good friend of mine has fed it for years and he realy likes it.
