Last week; three dog cast, we were looking the tree when my dog treed about 100 yards away. I went and tied my dog and came back and finished searching the first tree (about three minutes). I could even see parts of the tree they couldn't from their side of the creek.

depends on judge. if I was judging id say go ahead n handle em if its just 100 yrs away(cause all dogs r declared treed.) Ive seen some judges say wait the 5 out then go. so yes n no.

As long as you have a majority to score the tree no judge can deny the handler the right to handle his dog.

In a 3 dog cast the majority is 2.

when tree is closed i dont think there is any rule to stop you from handeling your dog period.... they may have to stop shine time until you get back...

ukc ruling

Jim , I did the MOH at B&T days in 05 . Hayward Ivery did it the next night and I decided to help him and also learn a little . LOL

So here goes , it was a 3 dog cast . Dog A & B trees and the cast is into 9 mins of shine time . Then C is declarred treed split 50 yds away . Handler of B yells here he is . The handler of dog A (judge) doesn't see it . Shine time is now OVER . Handler of dog C gets back and guess what ............HE'S SCRATCHED !!!! The judge never knew he left to go to tie his dog .

Here you had a majority at the shine time but still you cannot leave during a shine time unless permission given by the judge .
In other case a judge cannot keep you from going to your tree.
Remember in " shine time he can keep you there because he might need your vote to get to get the majority "

Hayward ( MOH ) agreed with the judge's decision and UKC agreed with the MOH .

I agree....you need a majority vote to score the tree. Majority could be two of three or three of four but if you ain't there a majority vote may not be reached.

If your dog is off alone split, why tree it till shine time is up???

Once they are done shinning but before they get the score card out declare it treed...they are leash locked and your dog has stayed during shine time/squalling etc when I see dogs leave trees the most...

No help to the question....I know..

I do agree that if you leave and the 2 can't decide you are supposed to break the tie....if shine time is up when you get back what happens? If they decide since you left they are circling a slick or plussing a slick or den just for the points you didn't shine and will never know..

If split treed before shine time I will gontie my dog back and come back ton score their tree for the full time...then goto mine...assuming all dogs declared treed or both trees closed and aren't overly far apart...

Lots of factors go into a "good handling decision"...

But once shine time is started I am not sure if you can leave or not....

I did it Thursday at the pup hunt...but I shined the tree and knew it was a legitimate den with no coon to be seen..and a 3rd hunter stayed with us....as i started to go the judge decided the same and scored it and came with me...

Best thing to do is wait and don't tree then make em think they going to get to turn back loose. When judge says collar em or get em ready. Yell tree so in so. One of might even cut loose thinking judge said cut em lol...

This is a very good discussion that I would like to see UKC chime in on. I know I got in a mess one night when I as judge let another guy go to his dog, which was split a long way (about 3\8 of a mile) away. I told him just wait there, as by the time he got there and back well it would take a lot of time, figured we had a majority anyway right? Well as it turned out the tree was obviously and I do mean obviously slick (little bush in a fence row that didn't touch any others and you could see through) , but the handler of the dog (who was sitting at 225+ and had 225 riding on the tree) would not agree and said because it had leaves and was in a fence row blah blah blah, but one thing he was right on was we didn't have the majority of the cast to vote him minus! He questioned it and took it to MOH, then fortunatly made a fool of himself by telling the MOH no tree with any leaves could be minused at which point the MOH upheld the minus, but it brought up an interesting question-everyone needs to be there, but what about when that just isn't very feasable? and when can another handler leave during shining time?

Hey

I believe judge should go to both trees.. When dogs are handled.. I had a judge tell me and another guy go handle our dogs when they split from the the other 2.. Well we went to our dogs no judge with us and the dog that was treeing with mine left the tree the it came back to the tree after I handled mine .. Well I told the judge and he wasn't there .. So guess lol dog didn't get minused and coon was seen .. That dog ended up winning the cast on that... So I would say a judge or spectator or someone needs to be with the handler .. Heck dog could be milling around the tree with his nose on ground anything...
