Is it just me or does it seem like dogs have a harder time finishing a track in the spring? I think coons smell less when they have young, to avoid predators.

What do you think? What are your experinces in the spring?

I would say it has more to do with allergies in the spring. But i do agree kitten coon with small size, and natural protection do give off much less scent

Dont know...id say more though...here the boars are still somewhat "rutty"..the sows, if they have litters, are in a den a lot which IMO makes em stinkier...

Only 2 times of year ive noticed trouble is intense "green up" when pollen is super heavy...and a heavy leaf drop...and its kinda kit or miss..some years/nites/areas worse than others..but the woods often smell really strong those times of year and ive seen normally great dogs look like idiots on those nites..


This time of year with rutting still going on i tend to see some.longer tracks etc...also have seen dogs hang up on logs and stuff...when i walked to those spots it smelled like super coon pee....


No kittens will be down here till probably late may or june..depending on weather etc etc...but ive never treed a kitten this early...heck its gunna snow tonite here

Just got in a while ago. 3 drops 2 singles and a big snapped of stove pipe den. All kill season long never had tracks that good. May have been the storm coming. About a month ago the tracks were hot and it was a locate then move on and another locate and move along then finally tree. Not tonight good track one locate and tree. Lot of fun.

I have always suspected that as the sows get closer to giving birth they give off less scent. I've seen times when my dog was trailing what I thought was a very cold track only to tree the coon up a small tree. It only seems to happen in the early spring and that coon was always a sow.

I've heard some of the older hunters talk about the coons smelling less after they have kittens i don't know if they smell less or if its allergies and pollen more then the coons sent we are still getting some rutting coons right now not like a month ago but a few our kittens won't be down till mid may to early june

Conditions are a little tougher when there is no vegetation on. But , some folks have to have some kind of excuse.

I have noticed that this time of year when the ground is beginning to thaw out and the ground stays warmer than the air during the night which causes evaporation, that the tracks which should be alot better "evaporate" alot faster making them harder to run.... But if you have a track dog it doesn't matter because the track is still there and it's still going to the same place. Most people are just finding out that once all the dumb coon are dead and the coon are leaving a trail equivalent to bread crumbs leadin to a tree that they might not have a Coondog after all.

It isn't a case of dog power..My last coondog had enough nose to RUN a dinosaur track, on more than once occassion I listened to her run and tree tracks that other dogs could not open on and I'd score on a coon balled up sleeping in the fork of a tree. And she wasn't hunting against plugs...

Ground/ air temperature doesn't seem to matter, every year around March & April I've seen it once those sows start to get a little heavy something about their scent trail changes. You'll still tree those coon but it will sound like a cold track and many times you'll tree that coon in a tree it has no business being in.

I agree with Nat.I took my 20 month old english dog out over the weekend.3 drops,3 tracks,3 coons.Only thing ive noticed is the sals smell sour which will make my dogs bark like its an old track.Plus when they get swelled up with kittens they dont climb as high in the tree.Makes them easier to tree for some dogs.Jmo.

You have got to be kidding me. Tracks evaporate into thin air. Sows smell less becuase the are pregnant. I bet they are harder to tree because they are running witht he easter bunny too.

coons aint as fat this time a year so they can run like the wind.i think a coon leaves the same amount of scent in march as they do any other time of the year, and a running coon leaves more scent on the ground then a walking coon.
