Jim can you explain how the Calcutta works? I'm all for the jackpots and Calcuttas!
In the calcutta, each dog is auctioned off individually. No, they aren't literally auctioned, the dogs chance at winning is auctioned. Anyone can bid.
Next up we got Spot, owned by Jesse Nappin. Spot is a GrNt, a flat out coon treeing machine and a regular winner all over the continental US of A. Ok, what's my bid? Anybody gib me 20?
I end up winning the bid on Spot at $40. The bids are totaled up, say, you got $400 in the pot. The club gets 30%, the dogs get the other 70%. The final 4 splits the pot which is $280 after the clubs share which would be $120. That's $70 for each final four dog. So since I won Spots bid and he got in the final four, I get $70, Jesse gets nothing because he didn't get his dog bought.
Believe me, almost no one is immune from this bidding. You should see how carried away some of those get. It's about twice as much fun as the hunt itself.
Jackpots, you just kick in, say, $10 or $20 per dog. You can get in or not, it is up to the person entering the dog. Total it up, same split for club and dogs. Everyone in the final four gets an even split IF they paid in. If, for instance, only one of the final four paid in, that dog would get it all.
Adjustments would have to be made for UKC's format but better minds than mine could easily figure that out.
