I am going to put up a kennel soon. Trying to get opinions. I am leaning towards the wire, they seem a LOT more stable & reliable. Does anyone have trouble with chain link ?

opinions are appreciated.

Yeah, I have had males dig right through chain link when the bitch next door comes in. I had to line all my chain link with hog panels over the years. They don't get through no hog panel.

I purchased the magnum kennels from TSC, cost me around $5000 and thought I got it going on now! Wrong!! Those supposidly powder coated kennels that they rant and rave on aren't worth a hill of beans, All the lower cross rails rusted out with me have to fix them half a$$. Hinges where welded to frame for the doors,same thing. The welded hindge pin for door to swing on rusted and broke off from the frame. Some of my friends had the same issue with them. After I sold them and rebuilt the kennel I chose to go to AKC supreme kennel line that is wire and galvonized thru out at TCS also. After spending lots of money again,I've come to the conclusion that there isn't a kennel built today that's worth a dang for the cost of them. These so called AKC supreme kennls are rusting also and another thing I can't stand is the 5 foot sections that it takes to make a 10 foot long run. Joined them together and the dang things keep giving side to side if a hound jumps up and puts it's feet up against one of them. the chain link kennels for the most part are worthless also. Where can a houndman find a WELL made kennel for dog runs. Stainless steel in a long haul would be the way to go!! OK, I'm not ranting now!! JMO!! Danny G.

i built one out of horse panels and pipe... done all the welding myself and have had it nearly 20 years... have some small spot rust but nothing rusted thru.... if you do this use pipe not tubeing... i am happy with how mine has held up and aint nothing chewing thru it

You've seen the kennels Marv has down at Bellars. right? Totally indestructible and sure to last at least 3 centuries. But a little over my budget.

the budget is a problem here too. lol with 2 kids it always is.

was also considering making above ground. I figure whatever I choose if off the ground the bottom will not rust as much, also keep from digging in or out. If on the ground I was thinking of getting some old railroad ties, burry them in the ground & putting pen on top of those. That way maybe ground contact would not be as bad also. They would have to dig farther too.

I built mine out of 16ft long cattle panels. They are only 4 ft tall, so I cut some of them in half long ways to make it 6ft tall. Used 4x4 treated posts and built my own door. My kennels are 16x10 and cost me about $150-$200 to build last year. I got everything from TSC and they are very sturdy.

I like the 4x4 sheep and goat panels. Same as cattle but instead of graduating up to bigger openings stay a constant 4x4. Much heavier than any chain link fabric or pre made welded wire kennels. Can be welded to pipe frame for portable or just attached to kennel building is how I did it front and back with removable dividers between runs. They will never bite or get through that stuff in any way!

Can you guys post some pics of the kennels you have made using livestock panels? I been giving it some thought and want to pour a slab 24 x 12 And sink posts and build my own with the livestock panels. Some pitures for ideas would be great!

Yep same thing bought the akc welded wire kennel panels from TSC and the bottom pipe rail rusted away, as far as side to side sway from the 5 ft panels take your drill and drill thru the clamps and screw a nut and bolt thru them. If I did it again I would set posts with the hog panels. JMHO

now another question. those that had trouble with the bottom of the welded wire kennels rusting, were they sitting directly on the ground ??

On a concrete pad ? Gravel ?

If you use chainlink order industural wire, it's much heavier and will hold up to any dog.

Not that you should have to with as much as they cost ,but if you are going to invest in welded wire kennels what I did is paint the bottom 3rd of the frame with Chassi saver paint. It cost a little for the paint, but it really helps protect and preserve the paint job......plus you can get all kinds of neat colors to make your hounds day brighter...
