training puppy to tree

I've got a 6 month old redbone puppy. I've got him going good. He will trail a coon by his self in the woods. I can take a drag and make a scent trail and hang it in the tree. And as long as he sees it he will tree... but he is just treeing on sight and won't tree by smell.. is this normal and will he grow out of it as he gets older? If there's anything I can do to help with this. Can someone let me know?

Couple times of that then no more-ever...lay tracks...hide the coon so it cant be seen...he dont tree...tie him back where he can see but dont let him have it-not a sniff and let it down then put him up...no reward till he trees by scent-it may not click till it gets older.Lots of fun short easy succesful lessons

pup treeing

I'm no authority on this but here is my 2 cents...laying short drags ...80 to 100 yrds...then takeing coon,,and rubing it about 7 feet up the tree..then I put coon back in plastic bag...and back in truck...then leash pup..and walk him into where trail has been laid..let him run it..and hopefully he trees it..then love him up real good..put him back in kennel..do this about twice a week,,,keep it fun and exciteing ..then when he is doing this well...do it at night with each drag a little longer ,,and thru water ..tougher terrain...just what worked for me..

Justin , give him time it will come. We will get him right before it gets to warm to hunt. He has no problem going hunting. By March he will be treeing. I will try to find more time to go to the woods and help you out.
