What! Nobody Shakes'um out anymore?

Running season use to be called shake season. A friend and me had a friend that could climb almost any tree, if he could not climb it he would climb one next to it and swing over. We had some great races, we did this to all our young dogs.

That was the first time I realized I was growing up....I was up an oak bout 40 foot, hanging out over a rock cliff about 40' , laid out on my belly for a 10 dollar hide. I looked out over the next count and said FOOL what are you doing....last time I climbed for a coon.

Good way to ruin a dog, teach em that at every tree there is gonna be smoking hot track leaving it at some point. Start with a good solid tree dog and before you know it they are milling around every tree looking for that hot track.

We didnt do it for the older solid dogs we did it for the pups and young dogs and only a few times it never ruined a one! Thats how I learned. Fired up a young dog and boy did they tree!

hopm same here. Back when the coon were bringing 40 bucks I remember hunting alone climbing a big hemlock to dislodge a nice coon that got hung up. I was up about 60 feet the wind had picked up and the tree top was swaying I looked out at the lights from Weathersfield Springs and said you dam fool if you fell you would be in big trouble and never climbed one again ! LOL!

I used to climb trees when I was young and dumb until I met a fellow coonhunter in a wheelchair at a coonhound event 35 years ago.

We got to talking about things and I finally got the nerve to ask him about the wheelchair. He told me he climbed a tree to shake a coon out to his dogs, a tree limb broke and he fell 25 feet to the ground and broke his back. He was left paralyzed from the chest down.

After hearing his story I never climbed a tree again. His accident and permanent paralysis was enough to convince me that if I wanted a coon to come out of a tree I'd use a .22 do it.

Yep, I climbed a large pine tree back in my late teens. I was so high my buddy couldn't see me or my light. A limb broke, and I fell. All I know is I bounced 3 times before catching a limb.

To this day I still don't sleep on that side.

That was the last tree I climbed. The worst part is now I am bothered by heights.

I messed one up pretty quick shaking coon out to him. It only took a couple times and he was doing more than what I would call milling, when I got to the tree he would peel out circling and looking for the track going out. I'm not saying that it would have a negative affect on every pup but I can't think of any time that I messed one up quicker. Lesson learned, won't do it again to a young dog.

We had a young man from our coon club we used to have around here fall out of a big oak kick'n a coon out several years ago. He didnt make it. Died on the way to the hospital. He was 17 or 18 years old I believe. Use a .22 you will live longer.

Yep this why it should not be done! Was very dangerous, we were very young and careless back then. Dogs are much better now. No need to do this.

I climbed a tree once when i first started hunting. got up there. Was about half scared to death due to the height. The coon just sat there staring at me. It sure looked like he was daring me to try and shake him out. I backed away shimmied down the tree and haven't done it since. lol never really told anyone about getting punked out by a coon either.
