pup backtracking its self

Little over a year old will get in there a tree coon but been trying to recut after first tree and have him go tree another and some times he'll go get trees and sometimes he'll go a ways then turn around and come right back his own tracks wont go back to tree just go right to where he was cut in the beginning and sit there.does it on a hole to will bark down a minute then head back. Ive switched him till he went hunting and will go hunting but doesn't seem to help any for the next time.

Sounds like the making of a real peasure dog. He has enough sense to track himself back and not run wild or bark lost.
