Winter Classic in Batesville...Like It Or Not

What was your likes and dislikes at the UKC Winter Classic, in Batesville, this year. What would you like to see changed? What would you like to remain the same? What improvements need to be made? This is the first time there has been a big hunt like this in this area. All suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

I liked Batesville. There were aspects of both that I liked. The drive to Batesville was closer for me which was a plus. The arena was also bigger and there was always cops around which I didn't see in Albany +++!!! Also, the fairgrounds were close to all the hotels so there really wasnt a drove to get there. The only thing that I could think of that I didn't like about Batesville was that there was sand in the show ring and around the show ring which got the dogs dirty the moment they stepped on it, after gettin the dogs ready at the hotel for an hour plus that was kinda frustrating. The show area I expected to be bigger since it was in a larger arena and I'm hoping they make it a little bigger for next year. I will be there next year for sure!

For your first run at it, I'd say you hit a home run! The only complaint is the floor of the Civic Center, It did get dusty on Saturday, and I know a lot of the Bench Show exhibitors were not fond of it either. I will also say that the Satellite club that was 2 hrs away is too far (Just my opinion). I did not get drawn there, but if I would have on Saturday, I would have withdrew.

Ohh, and my dog is faster than the coon in Mississippi, he kept beating them to the tree (if you can fix that, it would be appreciated).

The people of Batesville were extremely nice, the facility was spectacular, and the hunting seemed to be good. We didn't win a darn thing and had a lot of fun.

One more thing... Move the Breed Association Tents to the Bench show area. It will be much better for those who are working them, and more spectators for the bench show.

I agree. For the first year there I think it was awesome. It will take some time to get the changes made but I'm sure Batesville and UKC will be working on it for next year!

This was my 1st Winter Classic. My family and I REALLY enjoyed it and hope it is kept in Batesville for a LONG time. All the people I had contact with were nice and helpful.

For me it was longer drive but I still enjoyed this event (maybe not the drive home so much,..lol... but event itself was a big success I thought)
Here are a couple of constructive suggestions:
1) wet and hard pack that arena floor so its not dusty. I've been in other similar arenas and its definitely possible to do. I was told heat got left on Fri night and it dried floor out bad and it did get really dusty on Saturday. Looked like a dust bowl in there...LOL. I know trophies were dusty. I'm sure vendors items got dusty too. I think UKC will fix that next year.
2) it would be nice if arena were opened up before 8:00 each show day like maybe 7:00 or 7:30. On Friday there was a line of people waiting at the door. I was VERY rushed to get signed up, get dogs and crates in arena, and practiced before show started. I wasn't fortunate enough to get there Thursday. And I did hear a few complain about having building shut down so soon after hunters got called out
3) please try to monitor the motel rates. I had a room that was reserved early on and it was $76 or so a night. I had friends who wanted a room at same motel (Quality Inn) and room rate was quoted as $115 per night and it seems like lots of folks had to pay that. And Holiday Inn asked me $165 a night for a king room (no I'm not joking). With added expense of travel, extra high room rates can almost break the bank. I school teach for a living so I'm on budget! Once I reach $100 a night room rates, I'm out and can't afford it.

All in all...I admit I still like Albany. course I was familiar with that town after so many years there and am resistant to change. But I did think the new arena was awesome and the Quality INN was awesome also.....they gave us dog folks welcome bags of goodies!!!!! Not many places ever done that and they allowed our dogs. That did leave a REAL GOOD impression on me.

I figure this event is gonna be in Batesville for a little while so I'm open to making the change. It will take time but Ipredict it will be pretty successful there.

Had several complaints from big landowners in the area when they found out we were'nt killing the coons we treed. They told us to come back this week and kill some. Lol. Should open up some good spots for the local hunters if you'll contact a few of them. Hint Hint.

The dust was a big problem. It was worse on Saturday than Friday. As a vendor, I know this well. I have been told that the dirt will be out next year, just a concrete floor. Hotel prices can be addressed by the Batesville Chamber of Commerce. Building opening and closing times, and floor arrangements are determined by UKC. Distance to satellite clubs will also have to be addressed by UKC. Keep the comments coming. Dealer, let me make a suggestion for you. Get you a heavy log chain, about 8 feet long. Snap one end to your dogs collar and let it drag between his front legs and under his belly. He may beat the first coon to the tree, but this should make him slower as the hunt goes on and the coons should start beating him to the tree soon. :-)

sure hope the chamber has more pull than the corporate offices of the hotels. I reserved rooms at the cheaper price, but was unable to attend, and when issues starting coming up as in price increases and pre charging credit cards before arrival, all corporate had to say was "well if its the hotel policy we cant do anything".

Ditto what Penny said.....

I disliked the dusty, sandy floor...I know for a fact that they can pack that dirt floor almost hard as concrete or remove it...I am still suffering from my sinuses being clogged up from the dust! Blah!!

I liked that you didn't have to go more than 1 1/2 miles in either direction from the hotel to find whatever you needed to find, the event grounds, food, shopping, gas, ect...It was ALL there and VERY close!! (that is if you stayed in the town of Batesville)

Dust gave me nose bleeds. Other than that, it was perfect. One of the papers there said that was the largest entry hunt to date. Close to 900 dogs.

Medic-man and dealer !
What makes a hunt like this so pleasurable is guides and judges like yourselves. We had a great time because of you! Good honest folk that put you into coon and judge fairly. If every cast had what we had for guides and judges I know they will be back! It's people like you who reflect great credit upon our sport!
Thanks to both of you

As a vendor I spent 10 hours a day in the arena. The dust was killing us. By the time we got out of there it was in my teeth. That can be fixed. The only real complaint I had was no outside food or drinks. I understand it for the visitors but forcing people that can’t leave to pay that much for food and drinks wasn’t right. Give the vendors an ID and let them bring in a cooler.

If that can be fixed it would be perfect. The place was nice, the locals were friendly. I didn’t over pay for my hotel. I stayed at the Hampton in Oxford and it was great. I can’t speak of the hunting, I entered my dog but come down with respiratory infection and was not able to hunt. I did talk to a lot of people and they were all fine with it. So overall I think it was a great place to have this hunt.

It was my 1st ever event of any kennel club and Loved it. Only coplaint I got is I had to go early Friday and there werent very many hounds around. I also expected more owners promoting their hounds but will be taking time off to go next year.

IT WAS AWESOME!!! I hated the idea of moving it to Batesville but after I went I HOPE IT STAYS THERE!!! In 3 nights I treed more coons than I had in my 14 yrs of going to Albany. Plenty of food close hotels close. Hunting was great and not lot of standing water to trapes through. The arena was plenty big and dog barn was wonderful. ALL IN ALL GREAT MOVE UKC!!!!

I missed my friends in albany but other than that I cant wait till next yr

Albany replaced it with bigger things so I bet it never comes back there, they had another coon hound event not as big as wc I believe 125+ dogs and a big quail hunters unlimited event bigger than the classic.

Batesville

I had been to Albany in previous years and enjoyed it. That being said I loved most everything in Batesville. I'm with everyone else on the dust it was smothering Saturday especially. I went with a buddy Saturday night to Grenada they made you feel right at home. I drew out in Marianna Arkansas Saturday night and it was the same with real good hunting. There seemed to be alot more room there for the vendors as well. I am looking forward to going back next year.

Medicman... I will try that!!! LOL.

Jim Baldwin- Thanks for the kind words, I always try to be fair, but yet make sure the rules are followed.

Enjoyed the hunt with you guys, just wish that first drop wouldn't have been so messed up.

I loved everything about it....except the dust, but that didn't bother me because I already knew they were going to have concrete next year. (There was a rodeo or something this year too close to move the dirt).

I did hear a few complain about the long drive to sattelite clubs, but not too bad, and especially if they won. (We did have to drive that far.....nor did we win - lol). I heard a lot of the locals talking about how they would have more grounds next year having more time to prepare. They also said though if it were a week later (after deer season), there would be PLENTY of hunting grounds nearby.

Batesville city, businesses, the civic center, etc. were ALL EXCELLENT hosts. And I too liked the fact that the cops were everywhere to help and provide security (not to give out of towners tickets). Can't say enough about the host...they were great.

Hotel rates were awfull we paid 170.00 a night plus tax seems like when ever a big hunt comes to town the price go's through the roof and you wonder why the people were so nice ,i guess giving bull a bath was worth that price, nice place good area grounds were not dog friendly for shade and tie out but hats off ukc has awinner their, Tom

I had a blast and good hunts both nights. The dust didn't even bother me but I guess thats just me being from TX LOL! The only complaint I have is Saturday night in the Marianna,AR club I had a kid hunting a dog for me and he got scratched for talking to his spectator. The judge in the cast had a dog that slick treed and another guys dog in the cast backed him. My dog kept moving the track and after the 5 min was up all three cast members scored the tree. Judge votes circle and the other two vote minus. The judge gets pissed and says I don't care what you'll say that tree is circled. My handler then said " no sir we voted and majority voted slick so minus the tree". The judge then says that's fine and your scratched because you were talkin to your spectator and its against the rules to confer with a non cast memeber. They then went back to the club house and addressed the situation with the master of hounds. He denied my handler the right to file a formal complaint and told him if he didn't leave the clubhouse that he would get his a$$ whipped. I hope we don't draw out again there next year but I had such a great time that we will be back regardless.

Did he put a "?" on the card in the woods? Did he "interefere" with the hunts in anyway? Just talking to a spectator is not specifically in itself against the rules.
You can always report it to the UKC even if the MOH wouldn't file it.
Sorry that happened, but I haven't heard many such complaints at all from the WC. So, overall they did a good job.
