Old fashioned tracking systems.

You would think that you could buy an old fashioned tracking system at a really really discounted price but thats not what I'm seeing. New ones are still $500 or $600 and used ones are anywhere from $300 to $700. I did see one or two for $175 but that wasn't the norm. Are people really paying this much for them ?

You ever had a dog go in a field tile or hole? Garmins wont work underground. We have had it 2 or 3 times this year. One was gone for 9 days other was stuck in 10" field tile few hours from being dead.We just by the grace of god got close enough on a random hole to see him down pipe.

I can never understand posts like this, gotta be people that have never actually used a Garmin. They may not work underground but it will take you right to the hole where it lost signal.

unless you are in a nite hunt and your garmin was turned off to be in accordance of rules. or left in your vehicle turned on over a mile away. If your dog never hunts beyond 3/4 of a mile, and you always have your garmin turned on, then garmin is perfect. But if your dog never goes over 3/4 mile away, then why use a tracker at all?

I have bought a lot of things for coonhunting and honestly I would hunt with a pen light, put dogs in the trunk of a car, or give it up for a year to afford a garmin. Best money I have ever spend hands down on making hunting and running dogs more effective and enjoyable.

I bought mine 6 years ago for 420$....never updated, works fine today....I even still use the origional dc 20 occasionaly.

I know they arent perfect, but they are a giant leap ahead of the beep-beeps.

The steps saved, hours of sleep gained, getting ahead of a dog before it gets into trouble.....What are these things worth?

Run what you want, but for me a beep beep would be like going back to riding horses.

i run both. i have had garmin fail me a time or two and had to pull out the tracker to get a bead on the dogs. but the garmins are light years head of beep trackers. i still like the beep systems and when im hunting a new dog or getting used to a dog i will sometimes just run the old tracker. find myself looking at screen instead of listening at times.

I can atest to this. We got one out of a cave last Friday night with a Garmin. Showed a question mark right at the mouth of the cave. Just getting back into hunting and can swear a Garmin is on my list of new hunting supplies!

I have saved two dogs that I may have lost forever without my Garmin. One fell in a well and the Garmin walked me right to the well.

Another dog of mine got back in an old deep mine and the Garmin walked me right to the mouth of the mine. I could hear her moving around in there and whimpering. By shining my light down in there she was able to see how to get out and crawl back to me. No doubt in my mind with a beep beep style collar she would have died in that mine without me ever knowing what happened to her.

When the beep-beeps came out , folks swore by them .. now come to find that was all wrong because the garmin is what we can't live without and the beep-beeps that folks swore by all those years aren't good enough ?

It's a never ending game played by the ignorant and foolish , but they love it and so be it .

A good bond with your dog , discipline , homing instinct , knowing the woods , stars and all that stuff ... is still the best way to keep your dog safe and have a good hunt .... folks have strayed from alot of that and are relying on technology to get it back , but it's a poor substitute.

Tools that make any job easier and safer are fine , but they are only as good as the person using it ... an artist doesn't credit his paint brush ... Michael Jordan didn't credit whatever new style of basketball was made for him ...

I got no problem with technology , but I do take issue with crutches or anything that takes away from common sense and work ethic.

I'm not sure how so many coonhunters can be anti-obama/big government that breeds dependency ... and then be so dependent on garmins and shockers .

I don't like to be dependent ... on food stamps , welfare , garmin or anything else .... if I need that to have fun , I wouldn't be having fun anyway ....

old beep beeps

Last winter while coyote hunting a freind offered to put a garmin collar on my start dog when I went to turn him loose with his female. I said no thats ok I can find him, never lost one yet. Right after we turned loose we had a real heavy snow storm that lasted about an hour and a half. The dogs got split and we had no idea where his female was until it quit snowing. That garmin would not work any way you could try it. Old beep beep put us right to my dog. You could'nt have sold me a truckload of garmins cheap that day. I know they have their place, It just aint with me.

When telemetry came out, we swore by them because that was all we had and it worked great for the time period!
What game are the ignorant and foolish playing in your opinion? Is it foolish that my garmin has saved me probably enough gas, wear and tear on my vehicle, and time that it has paid for itself three times? Who is foolish now? Yes, a telemetry unit would do that too to a certain degree, but not with the effectiveness of a garmin.
The methods you employ to keep your dog safe will get them killed regardless of how well you think you have these things down pat. For 98% of us hunters, the days of dumping a dog in a patch of woods big enough to feel sure he will not get on any busy road is over and I bet that includes you too!
I depend on my shocker to bring that young dog I am training off that deer he is wanting to pump through the country along with other various training things that needs to be done from time to time. If you can sprint through the woods to catch your dog to whip him off that deer then you probably better find you one that will learn to run a track!

While what you are saying is true, the issue comes up when you have lost signal on your collar to the handheld, and then the dog continues on into an unknown location and ends up in a cave, well, or hole. The handheld indicating where the collar was last picked up will not help you in the least in this situation.
That is why if your dog getting in one of these situations is a huge concern to you, you need to start keeping up with your dog when the signal to the handheld starts fading out and try not to let a large span of time occur between when you lost signal and when you picked it up last.
Personally, I have never had to get my dog out of a cave, well, or hole in 25 years so that is the least of my concern. If I loose my collar because of a hole, I will just plug the transmit frequency of my collar in my AOR receiver and find it that way, similarly to how you would a telemetry collar because the garmin collar still transmits at whatever rate you have it set to until the battery dies whther the garmin collar is getting sattelite reception or not!
So, even with the reception whiners beating their drums, there is still a way to make these things work if the extreme, likely to never happen to must of us, did occur!
