It's a never ending game played by the ignorant and foolish , but they love it and so be it .
A good bond with your dog , discipline , homing instinct , knowing the woods , stars and all that stuff ... is still the best way to keep your dog safe and have a good hunt .... folks have strayed from alot of that and are relying on technology to get it back , but it's a poor substitute.
Tools that make any job easier and safer are fine , but they are only as good as the person using it ... an artist doesn't credit his paint brush ... Michael Jordan didn't credit whatever new style of basketball was made for him ...
I got no problem with technology , but I do take issue with crutches or anything that takes away from common sense and work ethic.
I'm not sure how so many coonhunters can be anti-obama/big government that breeds dependency ... and then be so dependent on garmins and shockers .
I don't like to be dependent ... on food stamps , welfare , garmin or anything else .... if I need that to have fun , I wouldn't be having fun anyway ....
When telemetry came out, we swore by them because that was all we had and it worked great for the time period!
What game are the ignorant and foolish playing in your opinion? Is it foolish that my garmin has saved me probably enough gas, wear and tear on my vehicle, and time that it has paid for itself three times? Who is foolish now? Yes, a telemetry unit would do that too to a certain degree, but not with the effectiveness of a garmin.
The methods you employ to keep your dog safe will get them killed regardless of how well you think you have these things down pat. For 98% of us hunters, the days of dumping a dog in a patch of woods big enough to feel sure he will not get on any busy road is over and I bet that includes you too!
I depend on my shocker to bring that young dog I am training off that deer he is wanting to pump through the country along with other various training things that needs to be done from time to time. If you can sprint through the woods to catch your dog to whip him off that deer then you probably better find you one that will learn to run a track!
