any chainsaw mechanics?

I have a husky 372 that runs fine but i am getting a dinging sound from around the clutch drum.Even with the saw off when i spin the clutch drum it dings.I checked the clutch springs and they are good. The drum does pivot a little on the needle bearing.any ideas?

The dinging sound and the chain trying to rotate at idle are signs of worn clutch springs. Even if the springs look good they could be getting week.

Thanks james that what i was thinking but here is the issue. The chain doesnt rotate at idle and if i take the bar and cover off and manually turn the clutch drum with the saw off it still dings.I wouldnt think the clutch springs would even be involved when i turn it by hand

Chainsaw

Check the clutch break. I have seen the break do funny things when out of adjustment. Good luck.

i think the drum is worn slightly out of round and as you spin it , it touchs the clutch making the ding sound.

I have worked on several. What happens is the clutch is not spinning fast enough to engage the clutch drum, but just fast enough to hit it lightly. That strike is what you are hearing. I would recomend replacing the clutch and drum.. Its just like a truck you should always replace the pressure plate when replacing the clutch... Your saw has the same principle.

Clutch Brake

It's the handle you push forward on the saw to keep the chain from spinning. Usually right on top in front of the engine.

Is this an older saw? Most saws do this as they age and wear with use.Usually the clutch and or cover are to blame. There should not be any play in it when moved. That is where the noise is coming from you hear. Are you over or under tightening the chain and is the chain on the clutch cover properly?
Otherwise it is smething you may have to live with.
