Executive orders on Guns

Well there has been a lot of shrieking around here about these executive orders coming up. They were released today and most of them are pretty sane and can be supported by the pro gun crowd. I think the first 6 deal with streamlining and standardizing the back ground check system. Not enlarging it, just making it work better. Several deal with gun safety issues [7,8 and 15], several deal with law enforcement issues [9,10,12 and 13], one is to get a new head of the ATF, one is to study causes and prevention of gun violence. Not too scary for sane people. Like 'em or not, here is your chance to know 'em so you can have a better informed view of these orders:
1 Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
2 Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
3 Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
4 Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
5 Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
6 Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.
7 Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.
8 Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
9 Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
10 Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
11 Nominate an ATF director.
12 Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
13 Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.
14 Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.
15 Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.
16 Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
17 Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
18 Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
19 Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

no. 4, direct the ag to review catagories of people prohibited from owning a gun. i wonder what can be done here? maybe add those that take antidepressants, maybe those that have adhd, bi polar, issued a dui etc.?
no. 7, safe and responsible. these are words with extendable meanings. a gun isn't safe unless it has a lock that only the rich can afford.

You Libs. are a dangerous bunch, Its only been a couple months since you were laughing at the idea of Obamas agenda infringing on our second amendment rights, calling conservative concerns unfounded.
Here in NY. The liberal governor and his minions have just passed Laws that make most sportsmen and honest citizens instant criminals. A friend who has devoted 30 years of his life to building a sucessful sporting goods business now finds himself in a position where 70% of his gun inventory is illegal to sell, and very few of those weapons would be considered assault weapens by any reasonable standard. They pulled a 7 round capacity out of the air knowing that a large percentage of manufactures have never produced a magazine with less than a 10 round capacity.
Keep in mind truly that the illustrious Gov. Cuomo may well be your next democratic candidate for Pres.
My conceal carry permit that i have had without incident for over 40 years will now require me to undergo a mental evaluation , and reapplication or i will loose my 2nd ammendment right.
How far will this oppressive Govt. be allowed to go before you liberals wake up to the fact that their agenda is to dissarm America. Once they establish a national database confiscation will certainly follow because anyone with a modicum of common sense knows a disturbed individual that wants to go out in a blaze of glory will find a way so these terrible incidents will continue.

I am no lawyer, but all I see is boilerplate, nothing of real substance. The gun control crowd seemed pretty disapointed.so I am going to consider this a win.

I think you are right on that. For those who are pro gun control there isn't really much to these exec orders. Barely even what Doug A would call "chip, chip, chip".

This morning, just like every morning in the past, I have strapped my pistol to my side and am headed out the door. I went and started my truck to let it warm up and the sky didn't fall.

What it REALLY is, is yet ANOTHER right wing propaganda ploy that fell flat on its face just like the others have. Yawn.

Did they limit the number of clips you can have? Why not put 7 rounds in those 10 round clips and carry 10 clips? You still got 70 rounds, or is that to simple for a New Yorker?

Possesion of any magazine with a capacity of more than 7 rounds is now a misdemeaner, even if its empty.

Slide plate off bottom. Put block in. Slide plate back on. It now holds 7. Get 10 clips. You still have 70 rounds.

If you can't work WITH the government, learn to work AROUND them.

Never been near Jersey but I'm sure there are some good folks there if you look hard enough. However, they can have my part of it.

TREASON!! TREASON!! Lets strip ole George of his place in history.

For the love of God folks, when will you right wingers ever learn the 'smoke and mirrors' is created by YOUR OWN SIDE. Millions of Americans left home this morning with their revolvers/autos on their sides, just like they did yesterday, and will tomorrow. Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Obama, etc... all were gonna ban guns according to right wingers. DID NOT HAPPEN, WON'T NEVER HAPPEN. Crying wolf is the EXACT reason you LOST and the republican party is the laughing stock of the nation.

On a lighter note, the NRA said thanks for all your donated money. They are having fun at the parties drinking fine wine and eating the best filet mignon while writing each lobbyist a check for $99,981.00.

so you are telling me you believe all those items on that list require an executive order? read through some of the items on that list, they are basic day to day business items, no executive orders needed. again its all just more manipulaion of the sheeple to say, see, look all these things he is doing is innocent. how else can u explain some of these items being listed as "executive orders"

Smoke and Mirrors, code names for Quomo and Bloomberg? Those two are the NRA's best salesmen.Everytime one of them open their mouths the hair stands up on the back of my neck. You also have to understand,The NRA is not elected, they are a hired lobbyist, hired by their membership,Doing what their members want, and doing it well, very well.

Me and you both know the Republicans probably BEGGED obama to use executive orders to save THEIR jobs. Wait until campaign time. Their main talkings points will be how they were against it. Yeah right.

Doing it well? Are you kidding me? They LOST !!! The NRA can't do ONE SINGLE THING !!! NOTHING !!! If they could, they would have done it. < PS thats meant for the folks that think the nra has pull with the government.

Called the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, New York's law:

•Bans possession of any high-capacity magazines regardless of when they were made or sold. Only clips able to hold up to seven rounds can be sold in the state. Clips able to hold seven to 10 rounds can be possessed, but cannot be loaded with more than seven rounds. If an owner is found to have eight or more bullets in a magazine, he or she could face a misdemeanor charge.
•Requires ammunition dealers to do background checks, similar to those for gun buyers. Dealers are required to report all sales, including amounts, to the state. Internet sales of ammunition are allowed, but the ammunition will have to be shipped to a licensed dealer in New York state for pickup.
•Requires creation of a registry of assault weapons. Those New Yorkers who already own such weapons would be required to register their guns with the state.
•Requires any therapist who believes a mental health patient made a credible threat of harming others to report the threat to a mental health director, who would then have to report serious threats to the state Department of Criminal Justice Services. A patient's gun could be taken from him or her, as well.
•Stipulates that stolen guns should be reported within 24 hours.
•Tightens the state's description of an "assault" weapon. Previous state law defined an assault weapon as having two "military rifle" features, but the new law reduces that specification to just one feature
•Requires background checks for all gun sales, including by private dealers -- except for sales to members of the seller's immediate family.

truly... You know what is just hilarious about this? These SAME right wingers that just months ago were complaining that the 'uneducated, poor, freeloader types' of major cities such as NY... ELECTED obama, now find themselves defending them. Ha.

quote:

I state my case once again. If you can carry 10 clips, you have 70 rounds, or 1000 with 7000 if you can tote them all.

Do you realize that a bolt action tube fed .22lr is now illegal to own in the state of NY? Who does that make safer? It's not the turds in the city that are gonna be affected, it is all of the law abiding people that are now going to be criminals.
