Coon dog training

I'm getting a 2 month old (closer to 3 actually) Walker pup. How should I go about training him? I have never trained a coon dog before, he will be my first.

Let him get some age and be a pup i don't like to start a pup in till 8 9 or even 10 m/o you can play some hide and seek with a coon hide till he's ready

So can I start him on some trails or wait until he's older to do that?

You can do alot of obedience stuff now. Teach him how to walk on a lead, to be quiet around the house, to come when you call for him. There is alot of stuff to teach a dog besides just how to tree a coon.

Depends on the dog but what you teach him today you dont have to teach tomorrow...lead load come...age is not the factor- desire is.Some dogs you wait till 8-9-10 months you have wasted a whole lot of good time.Other slow or late starting lines you will wast alot of time but dogs learn more outside a kennel than inside.

Dont push em on a live coon...that can set em back.Let them see it from a distance or from a safe zone..like stay outside the chain circle or kennel.Slowly ease it up every few days till the dogs seems brave or not scared.

Dogs dont chase parked cars...chase instinct is a good thing to try with some to chase a hide or run with a cage coon-instinct is how the best ones rise-triggering the instinct is the key-if they aint ready or they aint got it there is little you can do....Most dog we start here are triggered by chase (as in dragging the coon hide or cage)or older dog getting after it and the pup me too-ing with him.

Monkey see monkey do...some dogs need peer pressure..like when 1 pup crosses a creek they all do..or when 1 dog barks at a cage coon-the others get braver.

Hide drags can help get the dog associated with the game but many "short" fun lessons- never let the dog get bored-always leave it wanting more.

some start treeing-some start tracking 1st
