I've had hounds for almost 30 years and have always wormed my dogs fairly consistently with ivamec. This October my top dog stopped eating and began losing weight. The vet gave him a steroid shot some antibiotics and he was good as new. December 1st it all happened again and was treated the same with good results. January 1st, it happened again but much more severely. This time the meds didn't help a bit. He lost close to 10 lbs, spent 3 days on an iv, and the vet bills were stacking up. It turns out that he had a whipworm infestation and they were starving him of all protein. He is slowly recovering but it will take at least a month before he's back to normal. I've had to basically redo my kennels because whipworm eggs can live in the soil or gravel for several years. Supposedly lots of salt will dehydrate and kill them. Anyways, I wanted to share this so someone else might avoid this pricey and stressful situation.

Before I joined the AirForce I worked for 2 vets in Eastern NC. One of the first things we did when anydog got a check up was a fecal exam. If a dog had loose stool or diarrhea then multiple fecals would be taken. from my own experience of looking at thousands of fecal samples whips are pretty easy to find. There eggs have a very distinctive shape. If after several visits they either didn't do a fecal or never found whips well I would probably look for another vet.

What other symptoms was your dog showing? Ivomec is a good wormer for rounds and hooks but it doesn't get whips.

And fecal exam was done on the 1st visit but most whips were found. As far as other symptoms, his hair became dull and erect instead of laying flat. His skin hurt to the touch also. I did switch to a different vet that was working together with the University of MO. Everyone thought he had ehrlichiosis but blood work came back negative.

i have a dog that passes a worm ==the closest i can tell you how it looks is ==a magget== i use dronset==or drontol==tha stop for bout a month ==then i see them in his stool ==the dog is healthy an in good shape===any suggestions

Worming can get tricky .... some wormers get the worms , but not the eggs or larvae so they hatch out and it's like you never wormed them ... so you gotta figure out what kind of worms and when the eggs will hatch and it's a tedious process .

I worm with Ivermec , safeguard and regularly with that other high dollar tapeworm stuff .... I usually just hit them every weekend for three weekends and then wait a couple months and repeat ....

I'm sure a few slip through , but they aint gonna be able to set up shop and do much harm before I get em' again .. and I've always had vets do stool samples when i come in ... they are usually a little surprised that they can't find anything in it to make a case for another gouging on my bill , lol.

You have to worm them 2 times , 2 weeks apart.
Kills the adults , and then , in 2 weeks , it gets the newly hatched young before they get old enough to start laying eggs.

Also have to treat the ground with 20 Mule Team Borax. Lay it on pretty thick. It's cheap! And that'll kill the eggs in the ground.

I had a dog this summer with whipworm. The vet pretty much new what it was when I told him her stoole was bloody. He tested her and she was neg. The vet said most of the time they do test neg because they have an unusal cycle and it is hard to catch in the stool. We treated her with panacur 3 days in a row then repeat for 3 months. She is fine now. You have to treat for 3 months or you will not get them all. Make sure you keep the dogs kennel area clean.
