question for the northerners

So today I was messing around in my shop( dog kennels are on concrete next to it) when a county sheriff comes up. He received a complaint that my dogs were being "inhumanely treated" I walked him around, showed him that all my dogs have houses with lots of bedding(hay), heated water dishes that are filled daily, and they clearly all get fed well since I have a pretty fat pack coondogs.lol. I understand its pretty cold here at the moment in southern Wisconsin but all my dogs are fine. He personally said he said he didn't see a single problem with my dogs or there housing. He used to have friends with coonhounds so he understands they aren't usually house dogs. But tomarrow he has to send out a officer who is certified through the humane society to check them out. Any one ever have this happen to them? If so how did it turn out and is there anything I should do?

Hy house is half a mile off the road in the woods. The cop said the person who called had the right to be there and my propane got filled yesterday so I'm thinking that's who it was. I just don't wanna lose my dogs when I'm clearly not doing anything wrong

If your dogs look healthy, clean pens, good food and water, and dog houses are bedded down, there is nothing else to do. But the odds of them telling you who filed the compaint is purty slim. maybe once they inspect your dogs they will leave you alone and igfnore the idiot that turned you in.. sounds like you have a enemy for a neighbor.

I think the complaintent should be brought to light in these situations. They should have no right to be kept secret. If it turns out to be nothing wrong then they should be fined for false reporting. It is not like they are reporting child abuse

First thing to do is call that officer and tell him that you dont want anyone inspecting your setup unless they have a warrant to be there. Anyone connected with the Humane society will always find a problem with how hunting dogs are kept. Next i would call my propane company to let them know they hav lost me as a customer and why.

I made the comment about humane societys not liking hunting dogs and he said not to worry about it she won't say anything about it. My dad knows the officer and he said hes a pretty trustworthy guy so I guess all I can do is wait and see what happens

Call an attorney now, if for no other reason, just to have some one to turn to if you need. Better to be well prepared.

dogs

Same thing happened to an old man thatvive hunted with except it was in the hot summer. A passer by called him, saying mistreatment with no water for the dogs to drink and the sheriff came by for an inspection. he had a nice set up with a well insulated dog house and then a four foot by four foot shade bench with boards on two sides top to bottom so they could wrap the chain around. He liked.it and so did the dogs, they could stretch out on top to bask in the Sun or lay underneth to hey in the shade and drink there gallon dish of water all they wanted. The man was retired at the time and would water his dogs minimum two time a day and the sheriff found nothing wrong. He was able to find out the complainant as its public record by taking a trip to the station. Sounds like you are doing it right with your dogs and there should be no need for any other snoopers. Good luck and keep us posted

good news. now you need to go and find the person that turned you in. then let him know that anymore harassment won't be tolerated.

Ya I'm planning on going up to the sheriffs department tomarrow to fill the stuff out to find out who it was. I looked at our gas slip and he was there and filled it up yesterday when I wasn't home. Which was about 45 minutes before the cop showed up so that's deff who I'm thinking it was

I am a humane officer state certified and have been called out to look at situations with horses, cattle, dogs, etc. These days are worse then ever for these sort of calls. In my area we have a lot of people relocating from the cities. They have never seen these sort of things that are a way of live for us. So far every neglect call has been from a lack of information and lack of education on the whistle blower.

If you dont mind me asking, What is required to become a state certified humane officer and who provides the required education? And what authority does this certification provide as it pertains to search and seisure?

JOHN

It is 40 hours class room training in the state law enforcement school. Instructors from Georgia, Tennessee, and lawyers, and prosecutors, and other state humane officers, etc.,etc.....then you have to pass tests then a final test on law and a final on animal husbandry. Then you have to be appointed by municipalities after you are certified. Then you have to have 20 class room hours every two years to keep your certification. As far as search and seizure, It's just like anything else. Probable cause, get a warrant, etc. As far as trespassing goes, if there is an emergency or intimate danger or death you can enter.
