COLD. Who will die?

Just a friendly reminder to give your dogs a little more bedding, more food, and more waterings per day during this cold snap. We are gonna have a high of minus 4 today in MN. Much of the rest of the country will see very cold weather this week. Every time we go through a cold snap like this, this site will be full of threads announcing the loss of "old sarge", who "despite appearing to be in good health died MYSTERIOUSLY" on a recent cold night.
It takes a lot of energy and calorie intake to create the internal heat to stay alive in this weather.
It takes a lot of liquid intake to process those calories.
Many dogs actually die of dehydration in the cold. It is hard for them to take in enough water if they only get watered once a day and their water freezes in 15 minutes. Many folks think it wise to put out HOT water so that it does not freeze as quick. Dog comes out and burns his tongue on hot water and goes back in to doghouse and by the time he comes back out water is froze. It is not wise to put out water that is too hot to drink. Warm water yes. Hot no.
Warm mush is great. Soak their dogfood in water in your house. A big bowl of 70 degree mush twice a day beats dry food and ice.

I know this is all common sense to 98% of folks, and maybe the 2% won't listen, but it is sad to see a dog die due to the owner not fully understanding just how brutally cold it is outside right now.

Please add to this thread your advice or experiences in hopes of saving a few dog lives thru this cold snap.

I offer my dogs water a couple of times a day but the main thing I do is soak their feed. I mix in beef cracklins and my dogs love them. I feed in the evening just before the sun goes down and the feed ferments in their stomachs giving off heat which keep them warm. I put extra sraw in the dog boxes and give them a little extra feed. My dogs actually gain weight this time of the year. I have 1 that will be 15 in a couple of weeks, so I must be doing something right.

I lost an old g.n.c...sagamore blue..because of the cold, I thought he would be o.k. but I was wrong. I have them in an insulated building now. We were 13 below this morning with 28 below wind chill.

We don't have extreme cold coming like you guys up north but we still have a pretty cold front coming in. Mid 50's Saturday and could get into single digits tonight so I packed my houses with straw today and the normal warm water with their feed that they get anytime the temps get close to freezing.

Bo is my oldest at 10 years old but he stays in the garage on cold nights and with it being attached to the house it rarely gets below the mid 50's in there even on the coldest nights.

It is important that if you use straw to really pack it in the house to the point the dog has just enough room to turn around and lay down. I pack my houses to the ceiling and then work out a little hole with my hands and the dogs will climb in and work out a place to sleep. They are surrounded by straw. This keeps them much warmer than just giving them a thin layer of straw in the bottom of their house.

ya virgil, straw is the way to go...they freeze if a guy uses shavings, they like to burrow into it.

I use straw. Have insulated dog houses with flaps on door opening. Kennels are completely covered roof, sides and fronts. I also feed morning and night with native level 3 and hot water and do fine. I too would never bring a dog in at night then back out. Just got in from feeding and dogs were nice
and warm in the houses

Outside dogs are used to the cold but once it gets below twenty the mud room is their bed for the night. Not as warm as the house but a lot warmer then outside.

LOL If we did that around here the dogs would stay in the house 80% of their lives.

It was below zero this morning. I fixed up an old Milking barn that is half underground. My kennels are in there. Each one has an insulated dog house with a hinged door on it. My water buckets have not frozen yet inside the barn. But I still like to give them a little warm water over thier food every night............ Jon

Electric bowls are nice if you live in northern states had mine ten years.
Tractor supply will help you out for around 25 dollars well worth the money no more beating ice out of the bowls and the dogs always have water.

I had bought a nice 9 year old with good blood lines to get a litter off of several years ago. A partner was keeping the dog at his country place til she came in heat. On a bad three day snap of subzero days she died on the third day. The guy taking care of her said she came out of her box and was wagging her tail and barking as he left so he figured she was fine. She died that day. I imagine she was barking and wagging the tail begging for some food, water and warmth.
Seems to me like it is often the second or third cold day in a row that gets 'em.

We hit a high of minus 2 here in Minneapolis. Going to 16 below overnight.
I just biked home from work. A bit chilly for biking.

I guess it keeps them fat with lots of energy until it is put to the test. Still feeding suggested amounts of Diamond EA here with no drop off in weight or energy. Some should feed a better feed and they would find that they don't have to add all of the other stuff mentioned in this thread when times get tough on the dogs.
