A 10 or 20 minute track would be one that might be hit naturally at night, so don't think it is harming anything at all. It does allow you to pick out the direction that you want to travel, so should be safe as for roads and things. If you are doing it with young dogs by theirselves, seems like a good way to me, as they do learn by following the hot trails long before the start coldtrailing, even with old dogs to learn from.
