im just getting into hunting with these hounds and cant tell ya how much fun ive had so far....im havin a tough time cutting a track when i take them out at night so ive been trying to catch a live coon as much as possible for them i dont always show them the caged coon...what we've been doing is having one guy take the coon out and letting it go...about 10 to 20 minutes later we'll take the dogs and walk them across its track...so far its been working and they've picked up its track everytime and they've tree'd the last 5 or so themselves...this is as close to getting them on a hot track as i can get...so is this an effective way to get them startedor not????

I would not do it myself. They don't need a hot coon every time you go. Plus one needs to learn to get out and find its own coon to run. Not walk it across the tracks. How old are these dogs?

A 10 or 20 minute track would be one that might be hit naturally at night, so don't think it is harming anything at all. It does allow you to pick out the direction that you want to travel, so should be safe as for roads and things. If you are doing it with young dogs by theirselves, seems like a good way to me, as they do learn by following the hot trails long before the start coldtrailing, even with old dogs to learn from.

they need to learn to be cast and go find a track on their own. nothing wrong with doing what your doing a time or two. but they should be able to find a 10/20 min old track on their own. if they get to used to being walked across a track before being cast out, they may think you going to walk them to every track. i would start free casting them and see what happens

Keep doing what you are doing ,I have started alot of young dogs like that .You can see everything that is going on. Besides they are 7 months old, let them grow up .I would say they are doing great for babies. TOM

ive started many a dog the same way i think the best thing is to increase the time u wait every time u know 20 mins this time 30 mins next 45 and so on also i find it works well if u dont walk them acrossed track just kind head in that general direction then they find the track themselves that way they have to work it out instead of just giving it to them there still young and u still have alot of walking to do before there hounds but just give them time theyll come around soon youll be hunt wild coon just hang in there

we actually talked about that today...maybe letting the next one go about 45 minutes to an hour before we take them up.... and really i guess thats what we've been doing is taking them in the general direction we dont take them right to the exact spot we let the coon go they've been picking it up on their own...thanks for all the input

theyll get faster pickin up the track all in good time you can also try some feeder buckets they work real well for getting young dogs started but be careful how much you use them you want to hunt the wild ones or youll end up with grand night feeder bucket champions lol some of those things help me out training other peoples dogs

its a great way to teach a pup what you want it to run. helps keep them off trash and speeds up the learning process. no need to show a pup a bunch of cage coon but turning some coon loose is a great way to get them rolling
