Near the point of breaking

My 12 yr. old female is driving me to the point of insanity. She has started barking in her box at night. Not a trailing bark or a treed bark, just a arf, arf, wait a few seconds, arf, arf. All night long, every night, without fail. I tried bringing her into the house and putting her in the carrier, she does it in the house, turns and does the arf, arf, in the corner, like outside. She has plenty of hay, a box flap, food, water and I can't see anything outwardly wrong on her. She doesn't listen to me at all anymore. She was my most obedient dog. She is not deaf, she hears fine, but she is almost blind. She has lost her mind in the woods too. Just runs and bawls all night long, never backs another dog or trees, just runs and bawls. If I take her to the vet, they will run a slew of tests, charge me huge bucks, give her some type of medicine that won't do a thing and send her home.

Anyone have any ideas or solutions?

Some dogs get senile just the same as people. Her blindness is probably a part of it.

Senility...

... there IS some sort of meds that can lessen the symptoms some. Probably a tranq? Never had one live long enough into senility to need it yet so can't say how it works....
Does put you between a rock and a hard place.... Wish I could give you magic advice but.... I sure cant....

Hope you find a solution you can live comfortably with!

Heather

I DON'T want to put her to sleep. I was hoping that someone else has had this problem and has a solution to it. She was always so quiet, never, ever heard a peep from her, except when hunting and now she just arf, arf all night long in the dog box in the corner. At first I thought there might have been a mouse or something digging under her box, nothing and then when I brought her into the house and she did the same thing in the carrier, I was dumb founded. And if she doesn't realize anything is wrong with her, how can you say her quality of life is gone. She has here and now and I doubt she has dying on her calendar.

Guess I'll invest in ear plugs.

May be a long shot...but have you cleaned her ears out lately? Might not help, but may be worth a try. I use a few Q-tips and alcohol.

Englishbabe,
So sorry to hear about the way your female is acting.

I'm 61 years old, have owned and hunted coondogs all my life. I have had 4 dogs that lived 'til they were 13 - 14 years old, and have one right now that is almost 14 and, for his age, is doing as good as possible. Two did well and died peacefully.

Yet, I have had two that did much like you discribed. One died about a week after beginning to bark and moan and act stange. The other I put down after about 3 days. Sorry to tell you neither got any better after they seem to 'loose their senses'.

I was going through this with ol sis she could still tree coons great but if you didn't hunt her two nights a week she would drive you nuts bark in her box and out dig great big holes around her box. I let a kid in Kentucky take her and hunt her him and his dad treed a boat load of coons with her he picked her up day after thanksgiving by the first of feb she died best dog I walked behind. Can you turn her loose where you live? Or maybe vet can give something like a valium so she don't suffer much

it is so very difficult caring for people when they begin to lose their minds. it comes and goes and keeps care givers wore out. caring for an old or mentelly ill dog is just about as bad. nothing can fix them and they keep on living in a world between life and death. i commend you for caring enough for your dog to struggle on. i lost my first dog a year ago last may and i'm hardly over it yet. now i have a feist that's going on 12 and i know i'm facing a difficult time. i charish the time i have now and try to store up memories for the day she leaves me.
i suggest you take her to the vet. he may offer some kind of medication that thins the blood and allows it to circulate in the brain better. the doctors did this for my mother in law and it helped. you don't have to accept any other therapies he offers. you'll feel better about things knowing you didn't miss something within your ability to help her.

I just went through the exact same thing with my 12 year old GRNTCH...he was also blind and I gave him the best care that anyone could give, food, bedding, shelter, ect...he was my best ever in 25 years of raising, training and competing with hounds, was the hardest thing I have ever had to do but I had him put down. As much as we dont want to face it, there comes a time when you have to look at what's right for the hound. I did not want mine to suffer and I knew it was only a matter of time....he will never be replaced...good luck with your hound.

or Go to the vet and spend some cash on that dog you love so well it is proubally a brain tumor or diabetis or a stroke since she is acting so totally strange .I will never let one of my animals suffer or act strange without a trip to the vet but thats just me . I hope she turns around for you but there is no cure for old age just be glad you had her this long!!!

maybe your dog needs more exercise during the day,if shes tired at night i would think she will want to rest and not bark so much. as far as her bawling in the woods at night,i would say shes not able to keep up with the other dogs thats running because she cant see to keep up with em. if your dog is senile then i dont know how you would fix that, just do what you think is right for the dog.

I guess I'm gonna bite the bullet and take her to the vet. I am terrified they are going to find something wrong with her and I will have to make the gut wrenching decision to put her to sleep. I lost her 3 yr. old daughter in Aug. and also my male that was the best dog we ever owned, had to be put down for cancer. Autumn has brought me so many firsts in my coonhound world. I got her at Autumn Oaks in 01 and it has been a super fast 11 1/2 yrs. She is my everything, she set the standard by which I judge all my dogs since her. I can't let her wander in the house, she forgot she is housebroken, she can't stay in the carrier in the house, due to arf. arf every 5 secs. Believe it or not, she has been quiet for the last 4 hrs. and yes, she is still alive.

If anyone knows of someone who has a daughter or son out of her and bred them, let me know, I am trying very hard to get some of her and Zam's blood back here.

i just had to put down a 12 year old walker. he never shut up around the house. he did the same in the woods as what your dogs doing bawling everytime his foot hit the ground and it was because he has had a few seizures.

take a light and shine it in her eyes and if they are cloudy then she has cataracts and that could be whats causing her to bark and act like she is loosin her mind because she cant see very good.

check her ears might have ear mites or something like that wrong with them.

could be several things. the best thing you could do is take her to the vet if you can afford it or do like i did if you cant afford it and call the vet figure out what to do and what not ask alot of questions over the phone tell em what ya seen change in her behavior and what not and they can give you the best idea of what to do with her.

i hope you and Autumn the best of luck and i hope all gets back to the way it was

Oh Lori I have no words except I hope she gets better.

As for the little fella that told Lori to take this hound to the vet and spend a bunch of money, reread her original post.

I pray you and her finds some sort of peace.

My very favorite dog was a Sacket Jr dog that listened. I took him hunting on this day in 2010 > he got to trailing and treeing at 13 years old. I went towards him and he quit. I went back for a few nights and he would hush. I left a coat and feed and went on to the Grand American for looking purposes but when I got back down there I heard him treed on the forth night about where he was on the first night > I turned off my light and slippped in as best I could but he hushed again . That was three years ago and I as yet have never found his collar. I figured that is what he wanted and I never shed a tear.

I might be lieing! but not til tonight .

I can't let her wander in the house, she forgot she is housebroken, she can't stay in the carrier in the house, due to arf. arf every 5 secs. Believe it or not, she has been quiet for the last 4 hrs. and yes, she is still alive.

Lori , you know what's wrong . Her time is nearly over and there is no permanent cure . Start making plans as there is really no other way . Our old Shadow did this except for the barking & she lived in the house with us from puppy til nearly 15 years old .

if she can/will stay in house, put the panties on her to prevent accidents. take her out like a puppy..often. good luck in whatever you decide. I have one that will be 12 in May and one that will be 11 in May. every winter when it gets cold, I think it will be the last, but she is still hanging in there.
