Garmin ?

Compass on my 220 handheld goes haywire when im in my truck, never noticed this coonhuntin but now that we are runnin the coyote dogs we do alot more trackin from our vehicles. I hunt with others who dont seem to have as much trouble, if i get 6 feet from the truck it works perfect. If im on the dog page it keeps tracking yardage but the compass looses its mind? Recalibrating the compass doesnt change my problem.

Have the same thing with my Gator

I always figure there is some electric fields in the dash. Have just learn to live with it.

Same thing here with two different Astro 220's and now to a lesser extent with my Alpha. For some reason it is worse on my four wheeler but does it when I am in my Polaris Ranger or my pickup as well.

Walking a few steps away cures the problem.

Was wondering if a roof mount antenna solves the problem?

I stopped using the compass on the Garmin a long time ago. The only way to get it to work was to calibrate it almost every night and even then it was wrong alot.

I have Garmin set so North is always at the top of the map screen and I have a Wal Mart compass fastened to the buckle on my overalls to tell which way is North.

Are you sure about that? Its not just a simple magnetic compass because it uses sattelite position to recalibrate. My 2 dollar hardware store compass can point north sitting on my truck console but this 500 dollar gizmo cant?

The only thing that antenna does is receive signal from the collars. The shorter square antenna is the one that receives satellite signals. The compass is an electronic compass that has to be recalibrated usually every time you replace batteries. Being that it is an electronic compass, it will point to certain electric fields.

Mine does it to a lesser extent than my Astro's did.

Why not just look at the map page? The compass moving doesn't change their location on the map page.

Compass interference in the truck.

My 220 compass has always been inaccurate in the truck also. I'm pretty sure it is due to all the magnetic fields and metal of the truck. I use the map page for location and then jump to the dog page for distance. I found setting the map page so that north is always on top, like a map, works the best ( better than having the map spinning around all the time). I still have a cheap compass around my neck and my truck has a compass in the dash for when I loose track of my direction. Got tired of turning circles every night calibrating the garmin compass.
For me it's a great tracking system this way. I love it.
