12-25-12 coon report

First drop 2 dogs Jenny and rooster. Long run to a slick 50ft from a den. 2nd drop Jenny went left rooster right. Jenny trees without a strike and rooster joined. It sounded like a hole as I was walking up. Got there and both dogs were on top of a stump 7 foot tall and 5 foot wide. Rooster was down in it to him hide end. I could hear a coon so I climbed up to pull rooster out and as I grabbed him a coin crawls out beside him so I knocked it down to Jenny. Then I pull rooster out with another coon in his mouth. Killed both Coons and Jenny starts treeing 10 foot away from the den and another one was up that tree. 3 is enough for me for a night so back home by 8.

Dog hunted a decent patch out good last nite before Treeing and having one at the end. Dec 24th dog hunted entire big section out for an hour and came back. We went home. Coon haven't been moving really good here like they have past couple of winters.

Gosh up there also. I never claim to have the best dogs around but usually we can manage a couple trees. This year has been very very hard for me.

Coons not acting right

We are having the same thing here in MD. Granted my dogs are not world beaters but considering the amount of boot leather we've put down, we've had better luck in the past. Everything we've treed has been after midnight and all boars. We are pretty conservative with harvesting coons because of loss of hunting spots but they definately are not moving like they did this time last year.

I live in a real high coon population area and have a super nice creek right by my home. To my knowledge no one traps it and its right by the highway so nobody hunts it with dogs. I had a box trap set on the side of that creek for over 15 days with a variety of baits. I caught one cat. The last day I went to just pull it because I was sick of it I had a coon in it.

Its just how it has been around here.

I have not noticed too much different in their running patterns compared to the last few years. Ron, this is off subject. I don't know if it is b/c of the new trapper supply house close by or not, but there are more people trapping than ever this year. Kinda nice to see, I thought that tradition was dying. Of course, it still might die when the fur prices aren't what was promised or people realize it isn't easy work. I suppose I might quit hunting when they can set out the snares, though.

A couple of guys are trapping the sh** out of my better spots. No names on traps etc. I caught my next door neighbor setting snares in MY field without permission. This stupid COYOTE/PREDATOR trapping fad has got to go.

These so called "coyote trappers" who trap 50 coon to 1 coyote bc they are AMATEURS need to get themselves some hounds and learn how to have fun hunting them yotes!

I had one of my pups get caught in a trap just last week. IT wasn't a big deal but enough to kind of put a damper on the night. I am kind of at the point of not worrying about any of it. I always said when it stopped being fun that would be the end for me.

And looking at the ten day forecast I don't think this snow is going to be going away. I guess this was the perfect time to get sick...glass is half full...

Harvy

Glad to hear your having good luck with treeing coons. Might have to make a run down to patuxent. Have not hunted that for years. I usually do tree something when I bring my walker female but she will hurt you putting them up. Jessie has more range than I have woods to hunt. I was surprised to hear SParky is still kicking. Oh yeh, Reggie says he is still waiting on that shrimp you owe him.

Went out tonight for a drop took a 15 month old lone pine pup out checked around standing corn and small stream next to it and no tracks. Did some flintlock earlier and checked other creeks and no tracks around the either. Just plain ain't moving around here. I think having te nice days we had a few weeks ago to being dumped on by snow screwed with them a bit
