I call it squirrel hunting instead of coon hunting but my squirrel dogs do tree some coon in the daytime. When the coon will be moving in the day time is unpredictable but around the times of a full moon, the coon seem to move in the daytime more often.

When I was young and tough Id hunt from midnight to 8 or 9 in the morning. I remember walking to several coons while leaving my light at the truck.

Daytime

I hunt alot in the mornings. I sure like to see what young dogs are doing. We get some real good tracks to run that time of day. I have hunted in the mornings for over thirty years.

in my part of the country.this past week full moon been turning loose about 5 hour before dark and been done by 7.only do it when boar coons rutting is the only time ill do it in the day time,3 days ago watched the dogs run a big boar coon across the pasture a 530 and it was a heck of a fight when they caught hm.so it can be done.it seems to be based on location when the coons move in the day...not really day time but still a good hour or so daylight when we turn loose.

I have had more good hunts than bad when I can cut loose from daybreak till about 10.00 am, turning loose after 10.00 a.m.usually will lead to a nest, hollow or no bark at all.If you have a choice, hunt earlier and around water especially as the weather warms. From my experience a cold nose track dog will do alot more work on the ground,a good layup dog will show you more in the daylight although you will take the layup dog off just as many hollows. If you have never done it,you should. It is an experience only by doing it you can know what I,m talking about.Trade the bump cap for a soft cap and many times you can watch a young dog work.If you know what you are doing one can stop the squirrell treeing before it becomes a habit.Almost always when I hunt a dog in the daylight I will have a set up to deter it from treeing squirrells and therefore will not tree many blank hollows.Hunting in the daylight will enable you to see what a young dog is doing, many times when I am hunting deep water I can make a young dog move on instead of it barking on a log( water logged)You can do so much more dogwork because if you will stay close with the dog you can see it make a bobble or get hung up on a fence etc...jmo...EVERYONE SHOULD TRY IT...Happy New Year To All...

I like to see what the dogs are doing too instead of guessing> I like to see what the coon is doing too. I hunt salt marsh and coons liable to be out there anytime including high tide.
Since some of ya'll are new I'll post this video again.

Daylight. You can see the gator on the right hand side of the screen and the dog and coon fighting further out. The dog drowned the coon. Click on the picture.

best time to hunt daylight when the temps get up to the upper teens with the sun out. the coon will stir around and get water then lay out on limbs to warm up.
