Any ice fishermen out there?

I just got out on to the ice for the first time this year. Walked out about 20' from shore and it wasn't cracking. I'm assuming theres about 2" of solid ice right now. With the forecast for the coming week, I would say the lakes around here will be fishable by next weekend.

We have ice fishing here in TN, but the ice is in our sweet tea.

I just cleaned out (chased critters out) my fish house last night. I would imagine we'll be out by the weekend! With any luck I'll be pickling some northerns and get a meal of bluegills!

I love it. Can't wait! I've been studying up on flashers the last few weeks. I'm buying one for sure this year. Any of you run flashers? What do you like?

I'll post pics of the Stabbin Cabin tomorrow.

Todd, I've always used Vexilars. I will probably always use Vexilars. However I have seen some Marcum's in use this year that have blown me away. They seem to be an HD version of the vexilar with a few more amenities. They are a bit more spendy too, but it seems like they would be worth it. The down side is, every body that I've talked to has had some kind of minor functional issue. My vexilar's have always been absolutely BOMBPROOF. Just starting out with a flasher, I would recommend a Vexilar FL12 or FL18. It will get you going, is easy to learn, and has plenty of options without getting confusing. My FL18 has worked flawlessly for the past 7 years and this year I am upgrading to an FL22 and giving the 18 to my wife. You'll never ice fish again without one. It's a game changer.

P.S. Humminbirds are finicky from what I've seen and have even confused me, and I'm thoroughly familiar with flashers. Lowrance has a good product but most are LCD screens and they tend to be small screens that are hard to see sometimes. And LCD's don't do well when its really cold out.

I just noticed that the new Vex's have a larger and flatter screen. Kinda like the Bird's. That was a big improvement. The old screen had that shade around it that caught snow. I fished half the year last year with an old Vex FL8. It worked great.

The unit that really intrigues me right now is the Showdown. I like that vertical column. I don't mind the grey scale. It's the most powerful unit. And target seperation is 1/2 inch. But it seems to be a love / hate thing with most people that have owned one.

I haven't ruled out any of them yet. Wish I could test drive each of the ones I'm interested in on the ice for one full day and then make up my mind. That will never happen though. Thanks for the input. Vex sure has a strong following.

Last winter I fished almost exclusively with micro plastics for gills. But to answer your very pointed question, I'm not opposed to baiting fish. That should not relieve your conscience for baiting deer and turkey and white farm ducks.

So this is where you bait the white farm ducks ? You know using Vexilars to find your game or a spotlight not a lot off difference and useing a scented piece of plastic a'nt that baiting too ? might as well be sitting over a corn pile waitning on a deer or using a feeder bucket so your dog can tree a coon

I've tried it a few times up here but living most of my life in the south I can't get used to driving a truck on a lake. The ice gets about 3' thick on the lake near my house but it still kind of freaks me out.

Not only that, but I've usually got the wood stove cranked up. Nothing better.

Here's a few fish I caught the other day. The fish at the top is a 7 lb northern that my brother in law caught on one pound test line. That was a lot of fun to watch.
