silent dog

What makes a dog just quit barking track? We got a bluetick that has just went cold silent on track. Is there any way to correct it?

Brains. They seem to learn they can tree a coon quicker by not making so much noise. I had a dog like that; turned silent on some tracks but would open if other dogs did or if running in thickets. Just my theory. I think there's no changing that style.

nope

if hes silent you wont hear him open unless runs right on to a red hot track then some silent dogs wont open even if it is red hot you wont hear no races but your going to tree more coon and not walk very far to a tree unless hes a deep hunting dog if i was a hide hunter id rather have a silent dog but i prefer a open dog cause i dont kill very many coon jmo

Strike him off other dogs if your worried about him not opening up on track I know of a dog that old man down the road from me had he is in the hall of fame for winning so meny hunts when he struck he was treed tight mouth dogs will tree a lot quicker then loose mouth dogs

You hit the nail square on the head. Most of the silent dogs are more accurate in my opinion. The ones that just fall treed and you strike them on their locate usually have the meat, not all but most. I like that, you'll get a last strike but first tree usually. I know cause I have one. If mine just falls treed, I know he the coon. Plus I can tell by his locate if he sure or not.

I saw an announcement of a hunt once that said, "No silent dogs". Can they do that?

I wouldn't think so? but I would be mad if I brought a me to dog to a hunt and everyone had a tight mouth dog because I'd be screwd.

Silent on Track

What causes it in my opinion is instinct. You cannot fix it, it is in the breeding, just as many others have said on here. You have two choices, either live with the fact that most nights you aren't going to hear your dog work a track, but you may get to hear them tree. (OR) You can move her to some of these folks that like a silent dog, (not me of course LOL) and start over with a line of dogs that you have found to be open trailers. Sorry that this is probably not what you want to hear, but there is just some things on a dog that training cannot repair.

Good Luck!!

Most SMART dogs tighten up a little with age. I don't mind a tight dog personally. I don't want a silent dog but one that barks here and there then boom treed I like. If I wanted to hear a bunch of barking I'd buy some beagles.

How old is your bitch?
