Showing!

Ive started training my 5 month old pup on standing on a show bench. Ive never showed before so is there any specific ways to stand em? should he be holding his head up and tail up on his own? Back leg location? Should his back bend or be straight? Any advice is good, training and required tecniques would be awesome.

I agree with Rachel, Most judges will help you to.

If I was you take you dog and watch a good show and watch the handle. You can tell how can help you and how can't by the the way they handle there dog.
There is a difference between show a dog and a dog handler. Good luck

Give us a picture and we will do what we can to guide you from here.....

Going to a local show is the best start to learn by....
Most judges will let you set them for them after the orginal show and give you their imput.....

How do i post a pic?

I took a picture of me attempting to set him up on a table the other day but I could not figure out how to put it on here. i tried for several hours and just wouldnt work with me. I will say, he seems very willing to learn it. He stands pretty still and will actually hold a pose for about 30 seconds and Ive only set him up a few times so i think if i just knew what i was doing he would definately make a good show, that being if he is built for it body wise. If someone could help me get a pic on here i have one on the computer I could post right now.

Ouch! Unfortunately this pup is very flat footed. Just being honest. But doesnt mean you might be able to work with him.
In the pic. the pup is leaning back on fore legs and rear. Trim the toenails too.
Try to teach the pup to lean forward and get him up on his toes more not rocking back on his rear pads. Set the rear legs a little farther back. Front legs squared, under shoulders, perpendicular to bench.(90 degrees) Get come calcium & vitamin C in his diet for his feet.
My NUMBER 1 TIP; Work on getting that pup to keep his head still and in posistion by his self. If the head moves it throws the whole balance and presentation off.
Very hard to teach over computer. Try to get hands on help from a local club members, show people,or benchshow judge.(like the others said)
Dont give up and takes time and patientice.
Larry

P.S. The plywood he is standing on is warped and not level, plus needs to be worked with on carpeted or similiar nonslip surface.
This helps for the pup to hold his feet in position better.
I hope I could be of some help.

Ya he is very flat footed but when I got him he was very cat footed. Had some nice feet on him. thats one reason I picked him out. Everyone on here says its a puppy thing and they will come back. Thank you for that advice too!

And as I was saying; doesnt mean you cant work with him. The subject of feet on a B&T has come up thousands of times.
I'm not sure why U.K.C. determined with B&T people of yester years came up with the standards on feet they did, but it differs from other breeds.
With that being said, a well footed B&T show dog, will have one less item against them in competition (show).
IMO and my own experience, I have been been beaten many times by a cat footed Treeing Walker when all other features were even.
If the pup had tighter feet before a vitamin supplement and exercise will help get the pups feet back a lil tighter. You can also exercise the pups feet by learning to set the pup up on blocks for short periods of time.
I'm no expert but this might help you out.
Larry

Work him on just getting him to be still and work on his feet first and foremost. His head and tail will come when he is standing still. Hardest to get them up on their toes and to maintain their standing position. Most judges won't grade them hard on their tail not standing up on their own. Make sure his legs are straight, set his back legs back a little bit, and squeeze his under part of his chest and pull it towards his hind legs. It'll make him rock back forward into his toes somewhat and flatten his back out instead of it being swayed. Feet and leg/body alignment will be the first thing a judge grades him on. And unfortunately, unless he gets his cat feet somewhat back then he will be judged harsh on them.

I'm not trying to be rude, but there is more wrong conformation wise with your pup than just being flat footed. A lot of people think if they have a dog with good tight feet, then they have a show dog. There's a lot more to it than that.

His topline is completely out of whack, his hind quarters are too high, and I can't tell from a side view, but it looks to me like his back legs are a little cow hocked.

It's easy to fall in love with a pup and become biased. But if I were you, I would focus on hunting that pup and getting a better show prospect.

Drew, I agree with you his topline is off partly because of hind leg position and chest not worked up,and a dozen other, ect.ect.... We can be very critical of a picture and I'm my worst critic of my ole ugly hounds.
The main thing is this is a new fellar and he is interested in showing. And this pup is what he has to start with. He can work from there. You have to start somewhere.
I'm not disagreeing but everyone has a beginning.

I understand that. And like I said, I wasn't trying to be disrespectful, I was just saying, it's easy to throw in all your chips with a pup and have it not turn out.

I quit coonhunting for a lot of years and got back into it in 2002. I spent a good 5 years trying to make dogs and pups work out, that just didn't have it in them. I was so frustrated that I almost quit again. So, especially since he's new, I think it might be better to get a better prospect than to spend a bunch of time and money with a dog that may never turn out.

But like you said, it's hard to tell from a picture, it might be a better looking pup than the picture shows, I was just giving my advice from what I saw.

Yes, you may be right. Course we dont know what type of finances or access to other B&T's one has. It's tough weeding through the not so prospectful prospects.
Seems like you dont really know untill they grow and you have them for a long time.
It's a guessing game most the time. No disrespect taken, everyone has their own advice, opinions and experiences and it all is helpfull than none at all.

I apprecitate all the advise. I dont want people to be nice about anything, if he isnt worth showing then I would rather not waste my time. Thats alot less training I will have to do. HAHA!! Thank you all though for being honest. Its helped alot!

I was also gonna add that my wife wasnt home at the time so I was having my 4 year old boy take the pictures lol!! I had to go through about 50 pictures to find this one decent one and he always snapped the picture when the dog was about to or in the process of trying to get away. Not saying thats why he looks bad but I thought that was funny!
