Your probably going to get 3-4 dozen different answers but after 31 years of raising/kenneling hounds I have found Aspen shavings to work best for me. Its a softer bedding than Pine or Cedar. It is a hardwood product so it doesn't contain Phenols like Pine or Cedar - which has shown to cause respiratory & Liver problems over time in animals. It doesn't promote mildew when wet, virtually no dust & just overall a better bedding for me. I change it probably twice during cold months. I buy mine @ Tractor Supply.

i had to buy 2 bags of cedar shaving it was at a last moments notice because of the weather its better than nothing in my book.

i use the red ceader chips in the summer change bedding 1 time a month in winter i put in new chips and put straw in on top and add straw as needed till warm weather

I get the pelleted pine pellets at tractor supply in 50# bag. I think 5 bucks. It is horse bedding but it holds warmth and absorbs mosture. Put it in and a laywer of straw over to make more confy. It last a long time. You won't have to use near as much straw or hay with it.

i completely clean out the dog houses and dog box and use nothing is the summer{to avoid flea problem}.
and use straw in the winter.

change straw out regulary if getting wet is a problem.its only 3.00 a bale!! a bale will fill alot of houses!!

btw;everything will eventually mold/mildue if it gets wet!!

we have always used straw in the winter and nothing in the summer. Never had any issues. But on that note I was told to never use oat straw because it is too dusty and to use wheat straw.

I like good quality grass hay in the winter and some wood shavings in the summer. Straw usually has too much dust for me...

Many say straw is warmer than hay but my experience is if the straw gets wet from maybe a pup or pups running in and out or peeing in the box it seems to burn the hair if you don't catch it in time and get it changed. Hay unless really soaked has a tendency to stay dry on top even when it's damp underneath. Mine all seem to tramp it down flat in about one night .

When I was a teenager a long, long time ago I hunted with an old man that used corn shucks that he cut up with scissors for bedding. If it did get wet it dried very quickly and never molded.
I drew out with a guy from the Carolinas at the Grand American
when it was an ACHA hunt in the early 80's that had Corn Shucks for bedding in his dog box.
