I think UKC World rules are right.

There is another thread on here about how rules are screwed up at the zones of the World. I disagree. Winning the UKC World is not supposed to be easy. It is meant to be a serious test of a dog and handler that can hunt 12 perfect hours consecutively, and out perform any competition that comes along. It is not meant to be a hunt that lets someone slide by and hope for a better day. Yes there may be some arguments that on occasion a slightly lesser dog got through when a better one did not. But if that better dog was that much better it would have risen over whatever adversity it came to.
Many around here know my laughable bad luck at the zones. Over the years I have taken dogs that have been on a roll putting up good scores at local hunts and winning state championships to the finals only to be denied REPEATEDLY the opportunity to advance.Despite being so close so many times, missing the bubble by 2,3,4,or 5 spots with one cast win and another near win. I have seen dogs that my dog has beaten numerous times advance while mine did not. I have seen my dogs and others make goofy errors [possum, skunk, etc] that they almost never make. I have made handling errors and seen others make handling errors that they have never made before or seen others ever make before. I have been cheated in ways I have never been cheated before.
AND THAT IS ALL RIGHT. This title is supposed to mean something. You as a handler must not make a mistake. Your dog cannot make a mistake. It must tree real live raccoons. They must be able to be seen. They can not scratch out on off game or slick or anything else.
Seeing very good dogs fail the test is a testament to the ONE DOG THAT PASSES THE TEST.
I look forward to seeing the 100+ dogs and handlers that made the finals this weekend. I will get to enjoy it from the perspective of back up handler. I will hope to see as many rounds as possible and maybe get to watch a dog earn the title or get beat by the dog that earns the title.
Good luck to all who are chasing down the title of UKC World Champion. See you in LA.

Rules

Zone rules are good. Only problem I've ran in to is having a hunting guide and judge draw out in the same cast from the same area that are freinds or know one another you can run into problems. But thats just something I don't think that can be fixed. I guess just have a dog thats so good it don't matter, lol. I wished the finals were a little different. I don't agree with how they pick the final four. Getting the luck of the draw should be cut out. Why not do it like Aut. Oaks National Grand Nite Ch. If you have 8 cast winners have four two on two cast. I know they want a final four but I wished they could find a way to take out the luck of the draw on guides. JMO.

The hound with no minus and coon treed alone has a great chance to win most cast. In thin coon this is even more important.

Talking about being scratched for squalling. I was judging a cast at AO when the hounds split treed 20 yds apart. One hound still at large and struck in. We searched the first tree for 7 minutes and squalled for three with no coon seen. We turnt around to score the second tree and I told the cast that search time was started. One fella blew his squaller. This fella had been somewhat of an expert on how to judge the cast. I was a little put out at the fella already and should have scratched him in lieu of the rules and everyone concerned. The others on the cast didn't catch the mistake since we had already squalled at the same location.

I could sure see how someone could make a handling mistake.

And after getting back, I stand by my original thoughts. A very enjoyable trip, and a lot of respect to those who made it as far as I got to witness, and more respect to those who made it further. In particular to the one that PASSED THE TEST!
