Tanned hide for training drag

Does anyone have any experience using a tanned coon hide and trailing scents to work with a pup? I know its not as good as the real thing, but I havent been able to find any fresh roadkill in a while.

I try to freeze some hides in the spring before season goes out. But in a pinch I have bought some coon scent from somewhere (nitlite probably) since I had just got some stuff. I just put it on an old rag and use it. Seems to work pretty good.

Thanks, I just always wonder how close to the real thing those scents are.
