I have a 5 month old female walkr and i was wondering what i needed to do to get her started in coon hunting? I've taken her on a walk through the timber and she got ahead of me a few times and kind of put her nose to the ground byte she would always look back to see where i was. but i was wondering when. i need to start showing her live coon and if i should start doing some dragging? all help would be much appreciated!

I would say now. One in a rolling cage is great caz they will roll around but any live coon in a live trap would be good. Dont force him to be interested just let him go to it if he is scared just let him check it at his own pace and if nothing wait and try again another time. My pup at that age at first had nothing to do with a live one but i kicked the cage a couple times and when that thing hissed it was on!!! He went crazy. might do some scent drags and let him find them to. if he is interested in the live coon hang it in the tree just outta reach so he gets the idea to check the trees. Good Luck and dont forget most important tip is TIME lots of it training him.

so when i show my dog the caged coon and if she starts going insane over it do i let it out with a older dog to kill it or just pull her off and take her away from it? or should i drag the cage around and pull it up a tree and see if she follows it? and what should i do after she trees it for awhile if she does?

I'd be carefull about showing that young of a dog, that seems insecure, a live coon. Show her a hide or a tail. If you do show her a live coon make sure you have a couple of older dogs with her. Hold her back some and let the older dogs show her how it's done. JMO

okay so i showed her a live coon it was just a kit but i also had my other 4 year old dog on the coon going crazy and she didnt have to much intrest in it. she smelled it a couple times but just wanted to run off and play. so i had a little fake toy coon and i put coon sent on it and let her play with it and she shook the holy crap outta it and played with it and then ripped it apart so i of course had a mess to pick up but then i decided to take a coon tail and drag it around to see what she would do and she put her nose to the ground and she jump on the tree it was in but never barked and after a few second she was down and again just wanted to go run around and showed no intrest. i will keep working with her but im kinda stuck and dont know what to do to get her more interested in the sent and treeing. i know ive been told to go get the walk with wick book but any help or advice would be appreciated. thanks.

My dog didn't get too excited over the first caged coon I showed him. It don't mean anything at all. Sounds like your on the right track. Don't give up now! You got a long way to go.
I got my first hound about 8 months ago and got on here askin all kinds of questions, this is the place to do it, but one time I asked what to expect out of my 6 month old pup and this guy told me " It's a pup, I would expect it to piss me off day-in and day-out." Good advice I thought, keep doing what your doing, your pup will tell ya when it's ready for the next step. Good luck.

just keep walking her in the woods a while, i wouldnt show her nothing, it wont make her any better of a coon dog in the end. i have a 8 month ole cur, ive never showed him nothing, just been takeing him with me every time i go cooning and let him do what ever his instincts tell him to do, which some of the time is nothing lol. last week while i was hunting i saw him throwing his head up winding something, he darted off in the woods and treed a coon. if hes bred to tree coons he will, all he needs is hunted, and hunted where the coons are.

I always drag the scent and play with th pup a few minutes with the scent right before each feeding they say they will relate the scent with getting fed so they chase it to get their food. I also rubbed soft food on a tree low enough for it to reach but rub coon scent on the tree first without the pup seeing you do it. Walk them to the tree after you do this and its supposed to help the to learn to check trees for that scent. As far as the interest in the smell I thin a couple times a day for short periods is best so they dont get bored with it.
