older new hunter with questions......

Is it unreasonable to ask for a trial period when purchasing a coon dog, if I provide 1/2 the price up front?

.

if it were me i would not give a trail. i dont trust people with my dogs. anything could happen to it while on trail. for example::they could hunt it with another dog and get it eat up on a tree and then say they dont wont it. but i would show my dog in the woods any time.

From my experience, dogs go out on trial with all the money in hand. As was already mentioned, your best bet is to have the owner of the dog to show the hound in the woods.

Had a man tell me once that no matter what a dog does while on trial the buyer will find fault with it and return it. Pretty much found it to be true.

I don't sell dogs on trial and don't ask for it when I buy. I will take someone hunting with the dog if they ask but no trial.

Usually when you take the dog on trial you leave the money and the seller sends you with the dog and the papers but that leaves you at the mercy of the seller weather or not they will actually allow you to return the dog if your not satisfied. The best thing in my opinion to do is have the seller take you hunting with the dog. If they refuse, make excuses why they cant or if you at any point while hunting with the dog have any doubt as to if its going to perform when you get it home its best to count your loss and walk away. I've seen so many times people not being happy with the dog but since they spent their money in gas going to hunt with it they buy it anyway. At that point you've just wasted more money! Remember cheap dogs aren't good and good dogs aren't cheap.

Personally i wont buy a broke dog without atleast a week trial. that going to hunt with a dog thing is ok but a good hound can look bad and a shiteater can look good on any given night. If you present yourself as an honest hunter and a man wont give trial with cash in hand move on because that dog probably has some holes that you might not see for a couple nights. If a guy is telling the truth about what he is selling and he has the cash in his hand his risk is minimal and so is mine.

I myself would hunt a dog threw a trail hunt over a show them in the woods for 2 reasons.

#1: They could have had feeders up and taken them down before you got there so you wouldnt catch it .

#2: How do you know they didnt turn a coon loose before you got there so that dog would tree fast to make some fast cash?

So if they wont do a trial im not buying

I kind of do a hybrid. I insist a man come here and try the dog so that I get to know the man and if there are issues with the price I find out about it then. If the man likes what he sees for the price then he leaves the entire amount with me and then I give a weeks trial. If he doesn't have it delivered back in good shape in a week the money goes in the bank. Then the ex wife would have it spent in an hour. LOL

good old days

One thing I remember from my uncle Bud was 1000 dollars off the chain or 1500 on trial. You may or may not get the extra 500 back if you bring the dog back in worse condition then when it left. He allways told you exactly what the dog was. "No sense in not being honest about a dog because the dog ant going to lie for you.".

Trial

Best advice is go hunt with the dog, ask for the hound to be turned loose alone on the first drop, if you have a comparible hound ask to turn yours loose with him on the next drop. there is no better way to try a hound, if he hunts he will leave with or without company. if hes trashy, your strait dog will tell on him or should ........

I wouldn't buy the dog without seeing what it does first (obviously). I've let my dogs go out on trial before but the price is higher and I ask for the full amount (ya never know). There's too many idiots out there that couldn't give two shits less about you or your dog. And my opinion is if the guy wont let him out on trial and he wont show him to you in the woods more than once- find you a different prospect. Cause he prolly ain't no goo no ways. And I agree with coontravker49, people will do anything to make a little money when they see a fairly new hunter and knows they wouldn't know the difference.

older new hunter with questions

Thanks again for all your thoughts and comments. I don't think I'm interested in a hot "Comp" dog, although participating in some of the local contests would be fun. If I'm going to buy a dog or two I would probably be looking for a very solid pleasure dog. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and experiences... x145merlin
