Neighbor problems

Anyones neighbors have a problem with your hounds?

Got the call about an hour ago, for the third time that the local police dept was at my house for my hounds barking...

Now the lady next door has never said one word to me about them barking. Now this is the third time shes called on them barking whilr im at work. The previous two times I went ovet and knocked on the door to talk to her about it and she wouldnt answer.

The dogs arent that bad except one pup who liked the bark. Now he wears a bark collar and after 2-3 quick barks hes had enough for a few hours.

The only time any of them ever really start goin on is whem her kids are running up and down the fence and pretty much teasing them.

Ive lived in this house about.a year nevet had a problem until recently.

Im just lost at what to do here, she wont talk to me about it, has never complained toe about it and keepa calling the cops while im not home.

I cant have the cops keepshowing up and im not getting rid of the dogs

Anyone have a similar problem? If so how did ya handle it?

Oh yeah they really arent bad on the barking, I cant stand hearing tjem bark in the pen, if they were me and the dogs would be having a serious conversation and they wouldnt be barking much anymore

yea

i sometimes have those probs but theirs not really much they can do about it unless its at night then you can get a ticket most places have sound ordnances or however you spell it but they dont start untill sometime between 7 and 9 am my old neighbors used to call the dog warden and he basicially told her that if she didnt gather her cats he would because they were the reason my dogs barked

Heck I live on a 220ac farm. Was here way before any neighbors. Still I came home a while back and here's a note taped to my mailbox. Said I hope this bark collar works as well for your dog as it did ours signed david or daniel or something lol. Least I got a bark collar out of the deal. My pup is what caused it though. She did bark a bunch but heck Im only a hundred yards from her. I couldn't hear her hardly. The closest other houses are way off. No way they could hear her. I hope to meet this david feller out one of these days. I don't know what they gonna do when I get my small coon pen built.

Around 20 years ago, I had gone out of town for a long weekend. I came back into town early Monday morning around 3 or 4 am and a few hours later, the police and animal control arrived.

They received a complaint from one of my neighbors about constant barking all weekend long. I verified with the police and animal control the dates of the complaint and the barking.

Only one problem...............no dogs on premise on dates that the neighbor said dogs were barking and filed complaint.

Matter of fact, because I had just gotten back in town a few hours earlier, the dogs hadn't even been picked up yet and brought back home.

Hard to hear dogs barking when no dogs around to be barking.

They never filed another barking complaint again.

We were turned in and I had to get rid of the one that barked. I keep bark collars on three of them almost 24/7. I was told by Aiken Co that it is a 1000.00 PER DOG fine. I can't tell you the STRESS it has caused for me. I have looked it up and can't find anything in the county as far as sound ordanance or anything having to do with dogs barking. I don't like them barking either. BUT THEY ARE DOGS! My old female only barks when there is something wrong. The other day it was rattle snakes near
her puppy pen. Someone pulls up, sirens.

We have decided to move. I feel so much better now. I don't collar them during the day now unless they are just babbling. Good luck with it. I feel your pain.

I want to move too!

I have to say that I cannot wait to move and get away from the neighbors we have now. I have been unfortunate enough to live in a subdivision every since I got my one hound 4 years ago. He is not a big barker but my neighbors don't want him to EVER bark. We have had complaints several times=one from a neighbor who came to the house and said my dog barked all night long. I told her, "That's impossible because the dog is in the house with me and he lies down and doesn't make a peep!" But nevertheless, I bought a no-bark collar and put it on my dog. He hates it and looks at me like, "Why do you put that thing on me?" I have never collared a dog of mine it delivand don't want to now either. But until we move away from the idiots we live next to, he will have to wear it. Now, there are dogs barking all over this neighborhood, including two collies who bark non-stop even when they are being taken for a walk!! But because we live next to a**holes, we get complaints about my dog. Maybe because he is a hound and when he does bark, it's LOUD. But even when he doesn't wear the collar when I'm here, he hardly ever barks. Kids stand right outside our fenced-in yard and make noise and that upsets him but he can't be a normal dog and bark. Nooooooooo..
I think the thing that pissed me off the most if that our neighbors put a storage unit right up against the side of our fence (on their side of course). And it's right next to my dog's kennel. So when they go out there (even at night) and start banging and bumping around in that, he gets upset. And they stack wood right up against our fence too and it sounds like someone is trying to tear the fence down when they have it delivered!!
I grew up on 15 acres and this is the first time I've ever lived in a subdivision with close neighbors and I HATE it! We are going to move and I can't wait! I can't wait until the day that I can take a hammer to that collar that zaps my dog ever time he decides to be a dog and bark!!
I wish you luck but I honestly think the best thing to do if you have hounds is live out on a big piece of land. And if anyone complains then, then I would say TOUGH LUCK! People are so snotty these days. So sad that neighbor would not talk to you but called the police.
I hope things can work out but if I were you, I'd move if I could. It may be the only way you have much peace.

I live on 50acres and don't have a neighbor problem, due to the fact my lovely wife is my driving force to keep relatively quite hounds. She enjoys them even cares for them while I'm offshore. But if they do some barking that wakes her I'll hear about it. And I've developed the ultimate training/breaking tool. They get the three verbal warnings to hush. Then a 12 - 24 Inch very slender switch. It usually only takes once.

Same training here but I have a orange cloth lead that I use. When I go around the corner of the house with it though they all go in there houses. It does usually stay quite after my lil visit though.

what works good is game caller...if they think the dogs drive them nuts well then listen to this coyote howl for a night, or maybe they like the dying rabbit sound....whatever sound you want that will drive them nuts...it only takes a couple nights and they get the message real quick...

I can tell you this, there is NO WAY one of my dogs barking could possibly bother a neighbor as much as it bothers me. If they think they can bark at the house, they are extremely mistaken. Dogs have indoor kennels, clean well bedded houses, feeders and heated water buckets. I can take about any bad habit a dog has, but if you want to bark you will either leave my house, suffer brain damage, or die. I don't care if you can't tree coon like I never saw before, there is no excuse for barking other than stupidity and I just will not take it.

I've seen this work Lowe's has them you could try it if it don't work return it

PetSafe Outdoor Ultrasonic Bark Control
New from PetSafe, this decorative electronic birdhouse is really a Ultrasonic Bark Control System to control nuisance barking! Does your dog bark too much More important, does your neighbor's dog bark too much? Now there is a solution to excessive barking - even if it's coming from someone else's dog!

Designed to look like a birdhouse, the PetSafe Ultrasonic Bark Control unit can hang in a tree, on a fence post, or anywhere outside. When the Ultrasonic Bark Control System detects excessive barking, the microphone picks up the barking and activates the unit. This results in a safe high pitch ultrasonic sound that is audible to dogs, but not to humans. The offending dog hears the sound and will stop barking. Since it is unpleasant to the dog, the dog learns to stop barking! Designed specifically for outdoor use, the Outdoor Bark Control System is durable and weatherproof. You can choose from 3 sensitivity levels (activated at 15, 30 or 50 feet) as well as a Test level audible to humans. Requires 9 Volt Battery, not included with an average battery life of 2 months. The Ultrasonic Bark Control System has an power indicator and can be set to 'Off' to conserve the battery when you're away. Lifetime limited warranty on parts, one-year warranty on labor. Excessive barking can cause a real strain on your relationship. The Ultrasonic Outdoor Bark Control Birdhouse controls outdoor barking and no collar is needed! Safe and effective for all breeds and sizes of dogs.
PetSafe Outdoor Ultrasonic Bark Control Specs:

* Detects barking up to 50 feet away.
* 4 levels of operation

i wouldn't move or invest in anything other than a 911 trespassing call. You said the kids of hers are causing the problem by parading up and down the fence. Turn the table on her and i'll be willing to bet that she will gladly open the door to conversation on the problem. YES its a bad deal, but i wouldn't allow her to dictate to me how i am going to live. deal with the problem quickly and you'll all be better off.

complaining neighbor

I have not lived in town for many years but had a similiar problem when I did. This is what I did since the neighbor also would not talk to me face to face. I wrote a polite and respectful letter detailing all the measures I had taken to curb any excessive and/or unnecessary barking my dogs were guilty of. I then asked them if there was still a reasonable problem that they meet with me in person to discuss what they expected me to do to correct them. I also suggested the meeting take place in a neutral site and that they could bring another party along with them if they were not comfortable meeting with me alone. After signing it with my full legal name I sent it via certified mail so they had to sign for it to prove they had received it as well as keeping a photocopy for myself. Although we never met, I no longer had any visits from law enforcement or animal control after doing this.
I would suggest that you document any attempts that you have made or make to speak directly to the complaining neighbor for proof that you are making a reasonable effort to correct things and be a "good neighbor". If you ever do get a face to face with them remember to stay calm, be reasonable and respectful, take notes of the issues they present to you and ask them to review your notes and if possible have them sign and date the notes. Third party witnesses are a wonderful thing as well.

Pretty much agree. One brainless outlaw won't ruin it for me. They're gone.
I've lived in a Subdivision (85 x 135 ) for 30 years with a 3 dog law. Once the cops are called and you get a complaint you get a few days to correct a problem and then a fine if you don't. Day after that same fine again and it doubles and then doubles again the next day, and again ,and again. Pretty effective from the laws side of the problem . Point being you work at 100% quiet at the house and hope you get close to it . Most don't get crazy over a bark or two at feeding time but you have to work at it 24 hours a day because the problem always comes home to you .
Sometimes a privacy fence helps, a standard BB gun extends the length of your arm and usually all you have to hit is the dog house or water dish. Mine disappear into their houses when the window opens and never even see the gun.
Neighbors have a right to peace and quiet but most aren't fanatics about it, especially if they consider you a good neighbor in the 1st place . Now if you have one of those that thinks it's sole duty in life is to call the law every time the black & white laws start getting a little gray it never goes away or gets better. Starting a feud over a dog barking won't solve the problem either. Consider also that a hound with a GOOD mouth you hear a mile away takes a lot of country to contain the noise if they're barkers at home. You can live on a mile square farm and still have a neighbor across the road from the house.
