Slick handlers

I'm new to comp. hunting but i've already seen some very slick and some not so slick moves by handlers to get some of their wins.
(i'm not trying to get any ideas here)
Just thought this could get interesting!

What are some of the things you guys have seen other hunters do to get a win either within the rules or not?

Being honest lost me a hunt a little while back when my dog pulled from tree but i could have kept it to myself (as i was the only one that knew she came off) and squeezed out a win. But the best dog won that night as it should be.

It's how you train really if you mean by stricken of the leash, shinnen spider eyes etc as long as you know the rules you have nothing to worrie about (slick) handlers really ain't slick they just know the rules and how to use them

I seen a guy strike and tree his dog on the third dump of the night while he was standing in the blacktop road behund us. It was my female he struck that sounded nothing like his dog. I argued butwasnt going to get in a fist fight over a hunt. when we got back to the truck the guide told him where his dog was when he called him. I just looked up and smiled. I asked him if e still thought i was a liar then got in my truck and went to the house. it happens but dont let it run you off. KNOW THE RULES AND ENFORCE THEM.

Just be honest and call your dog truthfully and know the rules. If my dog does it I'll take my plus or minus if it mine. If you cheat to win your dog ain't what its supposed to be a coondog

it will come. be patient. I'd bet when the first one comes, they'll start adding up quickly after that.

Justin, that is the reason I have avoided competition hunts altogether. I have a couple of buddies that have done a lot of comp hunting in the past, but got out of it because they have young children, and they both want to baby sit me through a comp hunt with my dog. I just don't think it is a good idea. I have a short temper for stupidity and even shorter if someone calls me dishonest. I have heard horror stories about slick handlers, but from my understanding there are far more good hunters then slick ones.

Exactly what Robert put when your first one comes you'll go on a big winning streak and the wins will roll in. I thought I would never win my first one and when I did I won bout 5 or 6 straight. So just call your dog and have fun they will start piling in

slick handlers = make or break the rules so they can win, and enforce the rules to make others lose, its that simple.
a dog dominating cast with coons seen is hard to beat, but have seen them loose too when the big dog handlers go blind because they're getting their --- handed to them on a platter.
argueing with crooks will get you nowhere either, they'll just do whatever it takes to make sure you never win a cast, even if they have to outright cheat you and if you stand up to them, they'll threaten and barr you if they can. which i find amusing, thats why i go sometimes just to be entertained with the amazing STUNTS pulled to get a little old win on a dog.

I watched a guy try to tell the cast it was ok to delete all points and start hunt time all over(an hour into the hunt) He also later tried to say his dog could go back on the trail to check his tree after he declared him treed, and recieve no minus.(He left the tree about 100 yards or so) He got mad and withdrew because "those idiots don't know the rules"

I was only a spectator on the cast.

just hang in there, and don't get mad, it'll come.
when it does just smile and don't let the little thing bother you, they come up with some funny stuff when they get all serious about it.

one of my favorites is; how their just there to have fun, and how they try and treat everybody as fair as they can. can and fun being the key words.

I very, very seldom have any trouble on a cast. I've been competition hunting for 30 years and the best advice I can give is know the rules and have the presents about you to let everybody know your playing it straight and expect them to do the same.

A feller came by to pick up a free pup. I asked if he ever comp hunted. He said he tried it once and the score card was filled out in a coffee shop because the judge sorely needed to night champion his dog.

You think the slick tricks are not being pulled your mistaken. How about the crate and heat trick... It is a tough one to call.

The only reason that slick handlers are slick is because of weak cast members. If you know the rules, put your foot down, and enforce them, there is no way for a handler to be "slick".

More often than not I see it used as an excuse as to why so and so got beat... It's easier than saying the dog you're hunting is junk.

No offense to anyone but I have competition hunted since 2005 I have won an lost my fair share. Before I started hunting in them I sat down and read the rules over and over again, and I can't stand first time hunters come in and act like they know everything when I have hunted for 7 years.

When we go back to the clubhouse people say how you do and the first time hunter will say such and such cheated me. When they didn't know the rules and I just used the rules on them

I've been comp hunting for 28 years, and this is the truest statement ever made on the subject. If you don't win with the dog on the end of your lead, maybe just maybe, you need a different dog on the end of the lead.

You thought wrong. It is every cast members responsibility to see that the rules are followed. That is why UKC provides a procedure that allows any cast member the right to question any call made or not made.
