Picking a pup
Personally I think you should pick a coonhound pup the same way you would pick any pup. I'd pick the pup that seemed right in the middle of the temperament spectrum. Not the boldest pup because often those become the bullies of the dog world, ie a little more aggressive in temperament which could be a bad thing if you competition hunt. I wouldn't pick the shyest pup either because you want a dog that has enough confidence to handle most things in life without too much anxiety. There is usually a pup or two in a littler that seems to be right in the middle--not too bold or not too shy and that's the one I pick.
Of course if I am picking for shows, I want to pick one with good conformation--good color, good head and good tight feet. Good feet are important in the hunting department too as a dog with tight feet can cover ground better than one with flat feet (or most times anyway).
I also agree with the person who said that you should pick a puppy that you like and that seems to like you. One that wants to please you and one that you feel good about. Of course knowing the traits of the parents ahead of time is a good thing too. If the sire or dam is a hard-head or a bone-head, you can count on some of the pups being that way too.
Generally anything we feel good about is something we tend to put the most energy into and you will work harder with something you like, so absolutely pick a puppy you have a good feeling about.
I've had so many people tell me that you just reach down and pick one and that it doesn't matter, but down through the years of owning many dogs, I think that taking the time to actually watch the pups personalities really does matter. Some people don't think so but dogs have different distinct personalities just like people do. They are born with certain traits and it's up to the person who works with them to bring out the best in them or the worst. Good luck with the pup you get. I hope you pick a winner.
