Question for the veterans?

I was just reading the Rock and Jane post and read that the hounds of today are better than the hounds of the past. I have only been huntin for 4 yrs, so I don't know what the hounds of years past were like. I know opinions will vary and the longer certain hounds have been dead the better they get. Just from talkin to older guys it seems to me that the past hounds were better track dogs, and from my experience I would say that is true. To me it seems a lot of dogs get super deep just to find that red hot track or have been whooped to much for independence. I might be wrong, just my observation. If you guys don't mind I would like to hear your opinions on past and present hounds in general. Thanks for your time.

The dogs of the past (especially Walkers) could run a track like they were tied to it. They not only could drive a track, they loved to do it and were often trashy because of it.They usually weren't a real good solid tree dog till they were about three yrs. old. BUT ,when You got them broke and treeing good You would have an outstanding coon dog and it was not uncommon to have dogs that were 100% accurate. Modern dogs often never run trash but a lot of them do a poor job of running coons too!!! Nearly all of them tree ,often times before they are a year old,and often times over 100 barks per minute, but accuracy has been lost to the point that most people don't believe Me when I tell them about all the dogs I've known that were 100% accurate. This is the good and bad on both old dogs and modern dogs so the choice would be up to You as to which is best. P.S. I've been coon hunting over 50 years with all breeds but I've had more experience with Walkers than anything else.

My experience is just like Stonehill, though I have only been hunting by myself for 47 years. If you are familiar with labrador retrievers and like traing them then todays hounds are alot like them to me. Fetch a ball at six weeks old . Fetch a ball , fetch a ball, fetch a ball. Almost guaranteed to do it, or like todays hounds , do what they do. Almost takes the fun out of it. Kind of, but there is a BIG difference in a ball fetcher and a retriever that will mark and push his way through 200 yards of cattailes to get to a scaled down duck and get back with the duck. Todays labs can do that but 95% are just ball fetchers that you can't keep from retreiving. Coonhounds, mostly certain lines of Walkers are like that too and just don't have the umph to take a colder track and work it all the way to where a coon is in a tree. Really alot of hunters today don't want a dog that would waste thirty minutes working and treeing a coon. They would rather a dog fly along a pine ridge instead of the swamp where they ought to be till they practicly see a coon cross the road so they can tree him in two minutes. JMO BUt those deep and quick trees win alot of HUNTS. LOL Just not much fun or very impressive to old timers.

i thank the dogs of today came from yesterdays dogs its just
a matter of where to find it.i thank if you moved some of the
majors to the south you would find track dogs again it wouldnt be as fun as the tree dog style of 1500 -2000 pts
a night.

You evidently read the posts on the Rock posts wrong, what was said was we have more good reproducers today than in the past, being a good coon dog doesn't make them a reproducer. As a whole the dogs of yesteryear have nothing at all to be ashamed of.

Barrelmaker, I read the post right, just didn't put it on this thread right. LOL!! Thanks for the responses guys. Reproducing aside, are there any hounds out there today that still have the same traits from the older hounds? A line of hounds that haven't been watered down or out crossed to much? Once again thanks guys.

You have heard the old expression about dogs gettin better after they are dead.... same thing here. I have a little over 40 years of following hounds under my belt and im here to tell ya the hounds of the past could never compete with the hounds we have today either in the woods or the breeding pen. Back in the 70s if you had a dog under a year old that could tree its own coon it was a miracle, people would come from great distances to see it, today its not uncommon at all.
And all this stuff about the dogs today not being able to run a cold track, i say good for them my hot nosed treedog will be under a couple or three coon while that cold nosed sucker is warming his up. No more following one around for 2 or 3 years to find out if theres enough tree sense in his head to sit down and bark up. 40 years of selective breeding has for the most part given us allaround much better hounds.

If that old blood was so much better why arent the pups from all these old semen breedings tearin up the hunts? It sure isnt because they werent given a chance. I cant remember the last cast i was on where we had a junk race, you sure couldnt ever say that back in the 70s or 80s. Hard stay put treedogs are common now as a result of good breeding and better training methods. Going backwards is backward thinking.

Its hard to compare hounds 30 years ago to the ones we have today especially the entire breed. Heck i was 2 years old 30 years ago so i cant give an opinion on the old bloodlines. A more accurate way of comparing would be to look at each individual strain within the breed say yadkin river or sackett and see how the strain has progressed.

Im sure things back then were different the abundance of information wasnt available then like it is now. Hunting was different location and places for sure. Can the hounds of yesteryear compete with the hounds of today? Honestly I couldnt say but those old hounds were the fondation of what we are hunting today so much credit is due to the hound and the man. Think of the money that is available now to put into a hound heck there are folks that make a living huinting hounds Im pretty sure that was extremely rare back in the 60's and 70's for a man to make a living hunting someone elses hound.

I guess im just trying to say dont foreget where we all came from and always remember the ones that started it all.
