Rip..Sheriff

For those that know how tight my coonhound Sheriff and I were...a neighbors pitbull attacked and killed him yesterday. He got out his kennel and treed a coon on a farm nearby...pit jumped him and even the owner couldn't believe how their wonderful family pit acted. Just glad it wasn't their kids that were killed. Ol sheriff was my hunting dog in the winter and my running partner in the summer....ill miss ya ol boy.

Sorry for your loss

I just bought two pit puppies do to all the wondering people that wants to come on the property late at night. Theres a whole lot of pits that are natural non violent dogs but we all know theres some that well probally need put down. I think its all in how they were raised. Again I hate your loss but think about it this way. What if someones coonhound got into someones goats and kill their baby goats and two years down the road your dog got on his land and he just shot it because it was just a coonhound. Sterotyping people or even dogs is a bad way to do things but I do understand your anger.

I'm sorry for the loss of your hound. The responses posted are typical of what I'd expect. Would the responses be any different if the farm dog was a German Shepard, Rottweiler, Great Pyrenese, Airedale or other breed that is territorial and was bred to protect his property or owners?

How would many of you react if a strange person came into your house?

Your dog got out of his kennel was on another farm and got attacked by a Pit that lives on that farm and it's the Pits fault? Why? your dog was on his property.

I own several coonnhounds and 4 Pits. ALL my dogs coexist fine together and have NEVER shown aggressive behavior toward each other. I simply don't let it happen under any cimcumstances however if a strange male dog comes on to my property and tried to fight they'd have more than they bargained for.

At this point it's not stereotyping pits. It's just the way they are, they can be set off by the slightest things and turn into cold blooded killers. For your sake I hope you are the neighbors don't have kids.

PITBULLS

I JUST WANT TO SAY THIS ,I AM A ANIMAL LOVER ,I LIKE DOGS CATS ,,I HAVE A NUMBER OF EACH ONE AROUND THE FARM HERE.IF YOU LOOK UP THE STATS ON DOGS ,,ALL BREEDS OF DOGS ,,THE PITBULL IS AT THE TOP OF THE LIST FOR BITEING,KILLING ,ATTACKING OTHER DOGS AND TURNING ON THER OWNERS UP TO KILLING THEM. I DONT KNOW WHY A PERSON WOULD WANT THAT BREED OF DOG KNOWING WHAT THEY CAN DO.I BELIEVE ITS NOT IN THE WAY THERE RAISED,ABOUT EVERY TIME IVE HEARD ABOUT A PITBULL ATTACKING SOME DOG OR PERSON ,THE OWNER ALWAYS SAYS ,,HES NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE ,,"HE ALWAYS BEEN A LOVING AND CALM DOG.,,,THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION AND WHAT IVE READ ABOUT THEM AND WHAT IVE SEEN FIRST HAND AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER.HAVE A BLESSED DAY ,,,RON

I used to buy into the "It's not the dog/breed, it's how they are raised" But you know what? Coonhounds generally have a natural instinct to track and tree. Australian Shepards and Corgi's have a natural instinct to herd. Beagles have a natural instinct to trail. Most dachshunds/terriers have an instinct to go to ground. All of this has been bred into them longer than we have been alive. Pits have a natural instinct (obvious or not) to attack, kill, maim....... You can shelter them from situations where it may occur but it can and does still happen and often without warning.

Actually Ron if you'd do your research a little better you'd find several other breeds including Lab Retrievers have much higher reported instances of biting than Pits do.

The same aggressive, biting, fighting, turn on their owners etc. etc. stereotyping happened over the years with Shepherds, Dobies, Rotties, various Mastiff breeds as has happened to Pit Bulls.

Anyone that lets a dog roam free unsurpervised or unattended regardless of the breed is asking for trouble. This is especially true with larger more protective and aggressive breeds.

A pre-requisite to owning one of the so call aggressive breeds including Pits should be that the owner must have an IQ higher than the dog.

A good friend of mine lived a few houses down from me. He had one of the nicest looking blue pit bulls you have ever seen. He also had two daughters that this dog grew up with. They were constantly playing with this dog in the yard during the day and at night the dog slept in the bed with them. He was socialized every way possible. One day they were playing with a tennis ball with him in the yard and a school teacher was jogging nearby.... That dog snapped, ran her down, jumped up, grabbed her by the bicep and ripped the main artery out of her arm. They had to airlift this woman to charleston sc where she came very close to dying...... I kill every pit that I can and feel good about it.

Yet another uneducated person jumping on the stereotype band wagon. What if your children were attacked by a different breed? Say a lab for instance. Almost all dogs are the product of opportunity. I grew up coonhunting and I've never saw a hound tree if it wasn't given the opportunity. And also if you look at statistics, I would venture to say that Pitts are owned by probably 80% low income people who live in rough areas. You know, the type that think it's "cool" to have a vicious dog. I had a Pitt and he was probably the best dog I've had. He was a big lap dog. You could put treats on his paws and he wouldn't touch them until you said he could. We had to put him down at the age of 3 because he had bone cancer.

As for your dog, I'm truly sorry about your loss. I definitely don't think your dog should have died but if it was on the dogs owners property there's not much you can do...

The jaws on some of those breeds have been bred to a high ratio of pounds per square inch of pressure. That is usually the bigger factor in making attacks by pits so awful plus their bred in ability to maintain a bite hold.
