Old Sue, Back in the Saddle

Last night I decided to take the old gal hunting for the first time in several months. She has had a C-Section and raised a litter of pups, and is going on ten years old. But it was a nice night and I was in the mood to hear some of that country music she puts out.

About a mile from where I was going to turn loose, she struck out of the box. I didn't want to turn loose there, so I went on where I originally planned and cut her and Jewel loose.

Jewel went where I sent her, and got after a coon. But guess what old Grandma did--cut across the section and went back where she had smelled that coon and got after him. I wound up having two pretty good walks instead of just one. One to Jewel, and another pretty good stroll to Sue.

I thought she might be too soft to stay in a good race since she hasn't been off the chain, but I couldn't tell too much difference since she was in shape, at least on just one coon. I'm sure she would run out of gas if i had tried to hunt her all night.

But she is a tough old heifer.

Every now and then, I like to tune the old girl up and hunt her a little.

It will be a sad day for me when that long, ringing horn bawl no longer echoes out of the bottoms.

She is getting some age on her, but she can still jerk a track out from under the young talent and be gone when it makes a lose if they aren't on their toes.

I'd love to see some pictures of Diamond on the wood.

not the greatest...

but i did carry a camera this time. just wasn't sure what to expect. we got to some big old walnut trees and she started whining and pulling to go to one of them. richard hopped off tailgate of truck and let her go! she started smelling around and climbing up and down. and then started treeing. LOL! i had to run for camera...heck! i didn't know what she'd do ..LOL! darn camera "operator errors"...didn't get her on "the wood" like she was doing...sorry...but these make us "pleased as heck"...LOL! she is a short bawl and chop from what i heard. she'd already gone nearly 4 miles on the p/u so was a lil tired. was told she hadn't been hunted last owners. and don't know if she ever has?! but do know...I LOVE WHAT I SAW!! we would like to take her to the timber just for the heck of it. you just never know...
