Merry Christmas

and a Happy Productive New Year to everyone! May your Christmas be fantastic, and the New Year be a great one for us all.

Anyone here in Michigan had those dogs in the woods? It sure has been a tough December. The snow here in SW Mich. does not want to let up. We were able to get out twice last week on the only days it wasn't snowing, and put a couple on the outside. Maybe this will be the worst of winter, and January will bring some easy weather, and we can get in the timber.

Anyone have results of the Laingsburg Hunt & Show?

Winter hunting

Hello from the snowy northwest part of the state. We have all but given up on coonhunting and have been running these coyotes around the past couple of weeks. we got four last week, and we stayed out of the woods this past sunday because of musket hunters. My son gets out of school every day at noon and he has been getting some squirrels with his Mt.Cur on a regular basis. The coyote hunting is fast paced and fun. Merry Christmas to all.

I would like to see the clubs get together on all of their hunt dates including PKC hunts. I hate to try to decide what hunt I want to go to. I would also like to see if this state could put on a BIG hunt. This would take alot of clubs pulling together.

mi. clubs

i agree with stokin, having hunts the same nite within a hour of eachother is hurting all the clubs. jmo i would like to see a couple reps from every club get together and plan a big hunt. we do have the state assoc. that puts on the state hunt, but i think that could even be bigger and better, but we would have to work together. to many clubs putting other clubs down, again just my opinion. as far as inproving local clubs, we gotta make it fun again. i could go on but my one finger typing finger is tired. bad-moon

Strokin and Badmoon,

I agree it would be nice, but short of having a computer program to help and all the necessary data provided in a timely fashion it would be nearly impossible.

Trust me, I have been trying to get most of our hunt dates for the last few years. It is a pain in the keester! In fact, we have actually changed big hunts when we hear of conflicts with other clubs, but last minute changes would mess things up too. Our club shouldn't have too many conflicts between different registery hunts. We went to all Monday hunts for the other KC.

In Perfect, U.S.A. yes it would be great, but until then we will just have to limp by.

Big Michigan Hunt

The idea of a big Michigan Hunt is great - it should be the Michigan State Championship. Some ideas to improve it, boost entry and make it an overall good time:
1. Cooperation from all clubs that are members of the State Association. Encourage any coon club that are not members to become a member. This cooperation needs to be encouragement for each clubs member to participate and assist at the state championship.
2. Location-Location-Location. The state assoc. has had the practice of accepting bids for the State Hunt from clubs, and of those requesting it, using a "rotating system", so that everyone gets a turn. This needs to be changed. Let a club, or group of clubs submit a bid. These requests for bids should include a minimum criteria, such as a fairground or other such location to provide plenty of room for camping, venders, etc. Facilities for a large kitchen set-up to provide plenty of good food 24/7 during the weekend.
3. Thursday night warmup hunt - could use a Michigan sectional system to qualify for this hunt, similar to breed sectionals.
4. Plenty of things going on ALL DAY to give the family something to do, dog related or not, this can be very important to all - remember we are spending our Memorial Day weekend here with our family.
5. Pre-planning - all permits approved well in advance, for all areas that the guides will be hunting. DO NOT try to draw a cast to an area that does not have a permit during closed season!
6. Advertise - at least 2 major publications should have 1 or 2 page adds for this major event.
7. Prizes - seek donations for winners. This is a Purina Event- if entries are large there should be no reason why we cannot give a Dog Box to the winner of the hunt, or lights, or whetever!

These are just some things that come to mind. How about it Todd, is this anything you think ya can use?

Hey Timber Ridge,

I agree there is a lot of stuff we could do with the State Hunt. We need reps from all the clubs to support the State Association we have 21 clubs in Michigan, and about 10-12 that are active with planning the State Hunt. For example, a lot of clubs didn't like the location of last year's State Hunt, but Grayling was the only club that placed a bid??

Next State Association Meeting, 1:00pm January 22nd at the Reading Club.

Jeff

Michigan State Hunt

I THINK THAT TIMBER RIDGE HAS SOME GOOD IDEAS BUT WHAT THE STATE NEEDS IS FOR PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY GET INVOLED AND NOT JUST TALK ABOUT IT !! THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO VOICE THEIR OPPINIONS TO MAKE THEMSELVES LOOK GOOD TO EVERYONE ELSE BUT WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN WHEN THINGS DONT GO THERE WAY BUT AT THE SAME TIME I DONT KNOW AS IF THEY HAVE EVER ATTENDED A STATE MEETING AND REALLY KNOW WHAT GOES INTO PUTTING ON A STATE HUNT. YOU HAVE GREAT IDEA'S TIMBER RIDGE SO MAYBE YOU WILL BE AT THE NEXT MEETING AND STEP UP TO THE PLATE WITH YOUR IDEAS. JOIN THE STATE COMMITIE AS JEFF YOUNG HAS STATED

I think that your idea's a great. You should try to come to the next meeting. The State need's more people to get involved. It's hard to believe that Michigan has over 20 clubs and yet only a hand full of people show up for the meeting's. I believe that you will see a positive change, the State has a lot of great idea's. and could use more involvement and volunteering. Hope to see you at the next meeting.

State assoc. Reps

Thanks for the invite guys. However, this is my opinion (we all have them), I am not able, nor willing to drive around the state to attend the meetings. That is why we have reps from our club, so that we can have them do our voting for us, and bring us info from you, and our opinions to you from us.
Thanks

Do you all think Memorial Day date is more apt to help or hurt the State Championship? It's a good question. To a family in which all family members are all involved in the hounds, it may be a plus. To those individuals from families that are not all involved with the hounds, it may not be a plus as it's harder to skip out on holiday weekends. Just curious if anyone knows if this has been discussed in the past?

O.K., other options. What about a Thursday night licensed event? Slam or standard format? Bring in more people having a chance to hunt three nights??

What about a nice prize going to the high scoring Michigan bred hound? Draws big entries in the race horse world. Would draw more MI guys that have a good Michigan bred hound and wouldn't cost any entries on the other end??

I personally like the Memorial Day week-end. And the 3-day hunt is also a great idea. It could mean more money for the club who sponcer's it and bring in more venders. I also think that the High Scoring Bred Hound is a great idea also. It recognizes the owner and handler for a job well done.

Michigan State Hunt-

All good ideas guys, But as everyone knows it takes Peoples involvement to take a idea and turn it into a product. The State Assoc. Needs all the help we can get. You dont need to be a Club Rep. to come to the meetings. EVERYONE is welcome.

The Chesening Club has the State Hunt this year. They will do a good Job.

Todd K- Does this mean UKC is willing or OFFERING a Mich. State High scoring Michigander Prize????

Keep the Ideas Coming and I promise that we will work our best on them!!!!

lol, no that's not exactly what I meant. I was simply asking if you thought it would help with some local entries. I'm not saying UKC won't donate to the event either. Whatever COONHOUND BLOODLINES typically does for State Championship donations I'm sure they will continue with.

Todd K.

Yes, I think a slam series hunt would be great, or as I posted above, a UKC licensed hunt with some type of qualification needed.
I also am of the opinion that Memorial Day weekend can hurt the association. Like you say, if everyone is involved with hounds, its great, but what about the family that has a kid that plays little league, is a scout, or whatever, that needs to be back home by Monday morning to be in the local parade. Is this family likely to all come to a major event? Most likely not, dad will come, and then "hurry home", as Mom gets things ready for the Holiday. (not be be sexist, as we can change this to Mom will come, and Dad will stay home). Anyway, maybe some thought should go into the dates.
Again, as I said above, with each club having reps that hopefully attend the meetings, the clubs voice should be loud and clear at the assoc. meetings. They are the ones to do the voting. Keep the communication flowing from the association thru the reps. to the clubs, and you will have plenty of involvement this way.
I am, and always have been willing to assist in any way I can for the State Hunt. Judge, guide, whatever I can do. I am sure there are hundreds of people that will do likewise. The info just needs to be relayed back to the club level. In this instance, for the state nite hunt - if the assoc. feels a need for 5 committed guides/judges from each club, the reps need to be sent back to the club, seek this committment, and return the names and contact info to the Hunt Chairman of the State Assoc.

Lets have some other ideas thrown out here from everyone else. Todd & Jeff need to hear what we are thinking, so they know what we want.

Thanks

State Hunt Ideas-

Chris, A good thread has been started lets hear some Ideas-
Hear are some of mine- Some for the State Hunt some to help make the Statw Assoc. some extra $$$ so we can put on a better State Hunt and Youth Hunt.

1- A Assoc. Dinner with Door prizes and such.- Sell tickets and have a club hold the dinner or maybe even at a Banquette Hall.

2- Have a Warm-up hunt at the club holding the State Hunt- Split the Revenue 1/2 to the club 1/2 to the Statw Assoc.- Alot of dogs that will compete at State may want to see how the local hunting is (maybe the Dinner at the same time)??

3-The State Youth hunt event- Maybe have a Friday night Buddy Hunt for the kids to help them Sat. Nite. Make a weekend out of it. keep the kids busy, No "dead" time between events.

4- How about a Ladies hunt??????

5- New this year!! A Michigan State Treeing Contest Champ.

Lets hear some more Ideas-

How about a DUNK Tank with Todd K. and Allen G. in it.-$2.00 for 3-throws??

When and where is the next state association meeting? Are the meetings centrally located or do they travel around between the different clubs?I think holding the state hunt in a central location would help turnout.I also feel having it on a weekend other than a holiday weekend would help turnout.I feel the same goes for the meetings if their centrally located the turnout would possibly be better although I know from experience this is not always so.

Club reps.

As I have talked about above, I think it very important for each member club to have reps at each meeting.
Todd or Jeff: During the past year at each meeting, how many clubs are represented?
If this number is low, maybe a letter sent to each club, asking for participation from their club would be in order. Sometimes it takes a reminder to stress the importance of an issue. It would be similar to electing a Congressman that is never in attendance in Congress to represent his constituents.
