Caught On the Ground...Graphic Pictures

Well, I admit to being a little confused. I found out recently that I am hunting "Slowticks."

But the trouble is, they keep catching coon on the ground. i guess our Kansas prairie coons are genetically deficient and naturally slow.

Last Friday night, Roger from this board, and a couple of other buddies were hunting, and ran a big boar coon down and caught him. All Blue dogs. The coon weighed 25 pounds at least, si it was no kitten.

This morning, I got up around 3:30 and went a little round, and lo and behold, these old slowticks scooped up another one after running him about a mile.

Here are a couple of pictures.

I made another drop, and they scorched one up the creek bottom. He climbed a small tree for such a big boar coon. I think he was in somewhat of a hurry.

Here is Albert...

And here is Dandy.

I popped him with a CB, and he came down ready to rumble.

I have some pretty skinned up hounds.

The first picture is a coon that didn't climb, but should have.

They ran him out of the timber, and he made the mistake of trying to cross a pasture. Jewel nabbed him. She is bad about that. Wide open track dog, but catches more coons on the ground than any dog I ever owned.

The second coon, in the last picture, I shot out.

I

think them slowticks of yours look pretty nice giving that coon a bad time. My Cassie female would catch em on the ground running full open every now and then..she was a slowtick too.....Maybe we should start a new breed assoc. Slowtick Breeders of the USA. I nominate John Carroll for President........

I guess I'm used to a different type blue dog than a lot of people. With blueticks I have been with that could tree a coon, I havent seen many that were really all that slow on track. Most blueticks I have seen could move a track. Over the years I have had trouble finding a bluetick that wasn't either mean or lazy. On the other hand, of all the walker dogs I have been with I have not seen many walker dogs at all that were lazy or mean. Most of them give a good effort in the woods a hunting and usually aren't mean and growly. However, I have had a hard time finding many walker dogs that could handle a track by themselves and then locate the CORRECT tree. Now, dont think I mean "all" by any means with either of these things I have noticed. "most" but NOT ALL.

He's more of a cinnamon color.

He runs loose and always follows my truck. He will go five or six miles to hunt with the hounds. he is a decent kill dog, and will tree some on a real hot tree.

I guess he thinks he is a coon dog.

Albert is doing a real job, Tom. It is pretty dry here.

Our coon have been really running this fall, more than usual it seems.

I have a couple of buddies coming tonight, Roger Lathrop and Brian bebber, so we'll see if the old slowticks can stumble around and tree another one or two.

She is out of Gr. Nt. Ch. Gene's Blue Newton and Uchtman's Blue Nicky.

Newton was out of Albert and a Ranger V female.

Nicky was a daughter of Ranger IV.

The light female is heavy linbred on Uchtman's Ranger blood.

John:; I don't post on this board often but got a kick out of the comments on yours and Rogers hunt...I was raised in your country and still have many folks living in Bennington..West of the Solomon in the Gyp HILLS we ran those coon over 50 years ago...most caught on the ground and would be setting on their butt giving a good account of theirselfs...my little female caught # 5 for the year on the ground last night...never saw so many this early that refused to climb...unlike your hounds mine couldn't kill a coon if she carried a gun..is getting beat up pretty bad...those folks that make the Bootick comments have apparently spent most of their life in their own backyard...we all know there are some that will cause you to lace up your tenny runners...cu..jb

Mr. Boss,

Enjoyed your comments.

I love running these prairie coon. Some of them just won't take a tree. Like you, I have never seen them run like this in November.

Roger is coming over tonight and we are going to see if we can find a retarded or handicapped coon these old Slowticks can tree.

I'd love to go to the timber with you some time. I live straight north of Verdi, 3 miles north of the highway.

That Lab is a kill dog.

We've had him since he was a puppy and he follows my truck when I go hunting. I have yet to give him a ride in the truck, but if I am with six or seven miles of the house, he will be at the tree.

We had a St. Bernard that would tree possums and bark treed pretty good on a hot tree with a coon he could wind. The neighbors confiscated him by letting him stay in their house, and he won't stay home anymore.

Hey John, maybe the ole Lab caught that coon and the blue's got there about 10 minutes later and helped close him out. LOL Nice pictures. My pups are doing good. All 13 of them. Happy Thanksgiving.
