Anyone ever use shredded paper for bedding purposes? I have an unlimited supply and was thinking about trying it out in my dog houses but wondered what others experience was. Thanks in advance. Otis.

It works ok as long as you have dry weather. If you have an outdoor kennel/run and the dog comes in his house it is soaked and packed down after just a trip or two in and out. Holds moisture really well and won't dry out once wet, just packs into a hard layer. It's much messier than shavings I think. Just make sure you don't use small wood shavings, they can cause respiratory infections. Cedar shavings also are not wise, even though they keep out fleas. They can be toxic if the dog eats them and small pups are bad for chewing on EVERYTHING so not a good idea for them.

Grubb I just started using pine needles and so far having good luck. I had to quit using cedar as I have a dog that seems to have an allergic reaction to it.

cedar doesn't have to be ingested to do harm cedar contains a natural oil that will cause death in newborn pups that are subjected to breathing in the fumes
you here people say all the time i use it wiyh no problems but they are using the cedar with the oil extracted as this oil is used to put the scent in cedar chest and things of that nature
as there is no way of knowing if the cedar has had the oil extraced just stay away from it

as a former resident of the pine tree state (Maine), I can attest that most dogs are fine on pine needles, but a rare occasional dog is allergic and gets skin rashes from them. These tend to start on the relatively exposed areas like the belly.

During the winter months we use pine shavings for the dog bedding. My dogs seem to not like the cedar shavings...at least their skin doesn't. So I use the pine shavings that are made a lot like the cedar ones and have had no problems.

Cedar in the warm weather

Straw in the cold. If straw is not available I will use hay. I have a rake and every other night I will stick it in the front door and mixup the bedding.

I typically keep 5 dogs and my father has the same. Dad has been using cedar since the late 50's early 60's and he nor I have ever had a problem with the dogs or for that matter 8 week old pups and cedar.

I guess it is a matter of opinion. I know people that refuse to hunt a dog that has eaten and others that feed the dog before they go hunt.

A good eating Hay is the best bedding....I never use straw anymore..It can have mites in it.. That can cause skin problems.Its also bad about holding fleas..Cedar or Pine chips is good for most dogs. But not in the winter time.........4-5 hay bales due me all winter.....Some dogs break out if you use any bedding at all..Some guys have to use old carpet .They just replace it every few weeks..........I use old carpet in all my truck dog boxs...

For cold weather bedding, I like prairie hay the best, it will keep that FRESH HAY SMELL for a month or better. Also it doesn't break down as bad or as quick as wheat straw. Since I moved back here to Illinois, I just use GRASS HAY. For summer time bedding, I used Pine needles this year for the first time & it seemed to work pretty good.

Anybody use mulch? It holds heat REAL well, and I wouldn't use it in summer, but heard some say they use it in winter. I was wondering what the down side would be? The fine shredded bark mulch, not compost or the lumpy big chunks.
Seems like you wouldn't have the problem with dust particles (like with fine shavings), toxicity (cedar shavings), moisture (paper), or mites (straw).
We're using pine shavings now, I may have to try the mulch though when we run out.

My hunting buddy and father use grass hay in winter, says it mats down good and doesnt break up like wheat straw. going to try that this year. joe bryan

I think fresh straw is warm and good in the winter, although one of my dogs is alergic to wheat and gets bumps all over if I use straw. And yes in the summer straw haurbours mites and fleas.
Problem I have found with hay is they urinate in the hay, I guess like dogs look for a certain grass to pee on, if that grass is in there they urinate on it. When I bed with cedar or pine no urine problem.
Ive used paper, it works but it needs changed alot cause of the moisture thing and once its used, looks bad when you throw it over the fence in the holler, blows all over the place.
I'm going to insulate the dog house real good and try carpet and pine chips this winter.

mulch is decaying vegetable matter and during the process of breaking down emits methane gas best make sure irs finished breaking doen before use.

No, I don't want to use that kind. Around here that is called composte! I was thinking of the shredded bark mulch, basically pine shavings just a little bigger. It is all from the tree, they use it mainly on playgrounds and landscaping here but I know a few people who love it for bedding since it holds heat so well.

i use shredded paper anything else i put in boxes ends up outside. the dogs work diligently for hrs to get unwanted bedding out of thier houses and im also talking about dogs who wasnt raised with paper bedding
