coon boxes

crosby cooner email me for this info thought i would post it for anyone interested
heres how i make coon nest boxes they are made just like a wood duck bos here are the dimensions 12 inches square by 18 inches deep make a hole on front about4 and a half inches round tack a piece of rubber acrss front covering the hole just leaveit very slack what this does is darkens interior and keeps rain out have them mounted abou 20 feet off the groun in a substantial tree ihave found they like front facing south or southeast
had 9 out this past year and 8 had kits in them this early spring
i put them up late in fall this keeps mice and squirrels from using them at first i put tincans of soured corn a little ways up the tree this attracted them to the tree and they found the nest

a good potion of the 1000 acres behind my farm is new growth with very little nesting spots found a few using my wood duck boxes so i built some a little larger and they used all but one this past season this is such a good safe place to hunt pups that i try to increase the coon population and have suceed quite well

Until I saw your post I never realized you made nesting boxes for coon. Kyle and I have talked or a few years about making some for our land. When I was a kid in 4H we made wood duck boxes and put them up around at local ponds, so I was going to make some similiar but slightly bigger as you mentioned.
I was going to make the hole on the side so coon could climb tree and go right in the hole from the tree side. I never thought about a flap. I figured I would mount some in the big Hemlock trees on our land as coon seem to like to play in those trees as they are rougher softer bark and boxes should be less obvious to other hunters since they keep their needles year round. I was worried about squirrels using them, so you say put them up in the fall? I even thought about purchasing the lumber, and having the local 4H club build and then we could put up in the tree's as a project, then monitor. Can you see inside to tell if females are using for litters? Do you put a little hinged trapdoor to monitor? What do you do, carry an extention ladder to the woods? What type of wood do you like to make them out of? I was going to purchse rough cut Hemlock or pine at the
lumber mill. Any suggestions welcom, thanks!

Man you have had some bad luck lately, I am so thankful no one got hurt. I'll send an email to Skip as you suggested. Do you have a cell phone? Well don't worry hope your insurance company gets right on it, make sure you keep on them. Take care things have to get better. I'll be in touch, I sent you some emails and mailed out Julie's easy entry card so look for it in the mail. Take care and call me if you need anything, anything at all!
