I have two ford Rangers. As far as getting a lot of milage out of the engine and the transmission mine are very good trucks. Very, very reliable vehicles. Very tough. Now, the 4 wheel drive that I use when I hunt............ it just dont pull that well. Wish I had a toyota or a jeep when I hunt. The only tires that really, really, "pull" are the front right tire and the back rear tire. Other than that I like mine.

I'm getting a 86 in a couple daya with avg. miles and very little rust. 4x4 and ext. cab should make me a great huntin' truck.

You need to add a locker or limited slip to your axles then it will pull alot better

Danger Ranger

I got a Danger Ranger. It's a '88 with only 169,000 miles. It's got 4 wheel drive on the fly, 6 cylinder, auto trans with a king cab and is a nice little hunting truck for local hunting and hunts. BUT wouldn't take it too far from home cause the trans can can be a little ornery sometimes, gas mileage isn't real good (18 mpg) but it's paid for, the AC works and it will have to do for a couple more years until my daughters get out of college. Oh yeah, my Diamond Deluxe box looks real good in the bed!!

Hubby has a 1997 ranger ext.cab 4x4 and it sucks. But it is push button and has the bigger motor. It has also had the tranmission rebuilt about 4 times now.The 4 wheel drive quit working and nowtalk about gutless!I think his full size truck had more power than this did,and pulled better. But as far as more room,i hada regular cab 2 wheel and there isn't alot of difference in the room, just looks bigger.

Cinda I have also had to put a transmission in mine, along with the clutch.......(the clutch I can understand) but the pick up only had 110,000 on it when the tranny went out....So far I havent had any problems with the 4x4. I also have the big V6 in mine (4.0) which leaves no room to work on one. Also gets lousy gas milage (19MTG) My next PU will be a full size for sure....

i have an 88 ford ranger that i have put 4 motors in and 2 clutches . Its actually not the motor that gives out its the heads,, they crack some ford mechanics told me they were a bad problem in the 2.9s every time i had problems it cost almost as much to replace the heads as it did to put in a long block so that is the way i went,, other than that it got great gas mileage and got around pretty good. It was under horsepowered but most times you could scrap by with it.... jmo and experiences anyway.

Crys the wife

this thing is an automatic, and it took 4 times before it was fixed right. Then out of the blue the hubs stopped working! This thing has the 4.0 in it too and my car has a 3.1 and i can whoop him anyday.I think my worn out 3.8 in my 1981 camaro would walk all over his truck and it smokes so bad i take down birds and small children when i start it now.LOL And ours only gets about 16-18 mpg.We dont take it on long trips anywhere when my car gets 34-35 mpg.Heck when the trany was out we took my car hunting! It made it through most of the big holes that the truck struggled in.I think we floated over most though.I hope nothing goes wrong w/ the motor,it took 4 hours to change the spark plugs in my car w/ a v6(front wheel drive)the front ones took about 5 min,the back ones you couldn't even feel. Then someone had to put a 3 inch body lift in the truck. That is not fun for someone who is short to get in.Hubbies twin brother had the same kind of truck(ours is black and his was white) w/ the smaller motor. His gas milage was the same! And to top it all off, there was no room to work on it either. If i had to do all over again ,i would have got an s-10 4x4.

Yeah, the electronic hubs stopped working in mine too. Had to pay to have that fixed. I got the 4.0 v6 too and the gas milage is TERRIBLE.

I've got a 98 ex. cab 4x4 3.0 and its one of the toughest trucks i've ever been in. Sure, the gas mileage could be better, but with 4wd, mud tires and the "stop and go" of hunting, you're not going to get good gas mileage in anything. period. I like the Toyotas, but you're looking at at least a couple thousand dollars more for one. They last a while too and supposedly don't give any trouble, but boy when they do you're gonna be shelling out BIG bucks for parts and for trying to find someone to work on it. If this ranger of mine ever wears out I'll probably buy another one. Just my opinion though.

About toys,if you find a good or decient one that the body hasn't fallen off of.You are already in good.Hubbies buddy bought 1 for 500.00 and it was the best truck he ever had, sold it and bought it back a year later,Still had no brakes! But he got a really nice cd player for the year it was gone.I had to drive it several times and i would have bought it in a heart beat.
As far as my hubbies 4x4 we are putting in the manual lock outs in stead of the automatics. And we took it on a trip about 200miles round trip and it still sucked as far as gas.Like i said we take my car now.

My dad had a Ranger a few years ago, it was junk and I hated driving it. Everytime I depressed the clutch, my shin would hit the hood release, unless I held my foot at a strange angle. After that, I never wanted one. I was willing to buy one a couple years ago when I was looking for a hunting truck, but fortunately a friend of mine sold me his Toyota, for a good price. It did need some work, and I would not recommend buying one from a Michigan bear hunter. The bed has more dents in it than you can count, and the rest of the body is really rusty, but it runs and hauls the dogs anywhere I need them to go. I will vouch for the parts thing though, they ain't cheap. I would buy another one in a heartbeat though, I like it even though it has been abused pretty bad.

Ultimately I think that the Rangers and Toyotas are the best all-around trucks--especially for hunting. I think you'll be satisfied with one or the other--but buy because its what you want and not because its cheap. Either one are good trucks, both have their good and bad things that some do and don't like about 'em.
