Best way to break a slick treer

This is new to me , most pups out of my dog are accurate , they usually tree with a coon before they really run tracks , this pup is a every breath tree dog but trees slick. 8 out 10 times. What's the best way to break him without making him not want to tree

start hunting open fields where he will have to run a track. quit turning him loose in the timber.

I prefer to nick them with e collar, you might have to step in the first couple times, but after a while ya nick them once, and there back on track.

He takes after his momma Jeff. I wouldn't shoot anything out to him for a while. The less I shoot to mine the more accurate they are. The more I shoot to them, the less accurate they are.
My pup is about to become good at striking hot tracks out a boat after the SS. Hasn't junked on anything in a while. I think I got that problem over with. She has been treeing split, just not staying put till I can get there. Driving me crazy, because I know she has a coon.

Keith
This is a different male - gunner is doing good I think 9 out of last 12 trees with coons. This pup is not running tracks he is just treeing , if he is with a dog he doesn't open , he just trees a couple of times there was a coon , but most of the time it's not , he has only had 3 coons shot out, 2 months ago he wouldn't tree at all . He is not a typical Ike pup.

If he isn't running track yet what would ya expect from a pup? Maybe it is best not to do anything until he is better on his way. I have a pup that seems to be in similar place. I will be hunting him alone from here on out, until he figures out how to run a track.

I would never shock a dog on a tree. I don't care if its slick or not. If you hunt pups and train young dogs its going to happen. If mr coon runs up in the tree a little and jumps back out or taps out on a pup and they don't circle its going to happen. Most of the time a young dog or pup will just smell were it went up the tree and pull up treed. They will not circle the tree to see if it tapped out or jumped out. These old coons don't get old from being stupid. A shocker is a good tool in the hands of the right trainer. But I have seen a BUNCH of young dogs and pups ruined by a shocker as well. Never, never, never shock a dog on the tree. Raise your voice cut a switch bust there A$$ and send them on make them finish it. Most of the time they will den or hole up but make the pup finish the track. My dad has a 2and 1/2 year old that we are trying to break off possums I can raise my voice at him and he will haul a$$ toward the truck. Because I have cut a switch on him a few times. He knows if the voice is raised it aint right. I always toned my dogs before shocking them as well. I tone, then tone again, if no response from said dog I go to about 4 and bump him with the shocker. Using this method 99% of the time I can tone and they haul a$$ to me or the will quit what they are doing.

I have to respectfully disagree. I have seen too many young dogs that would slick tree like mad due to mishandling by their trainer. The same dogs became a reliably accurate coon hound under the guidance of a different trainer.

X2.

I've also seen it go the other way. Had a buddy send a dog out on a 2 week trial, she was a nice straight, and accurate coondog when she left. When she came back, she would pull up short more often than not. Took a month or so to get her back to what she was, now she is better than ever.

Has a whole lot to do with what a handler lets a dog get away with, and what kind of dogs they're hunting with. That's one of the main reasons I don't believe in sending a dog out on a "trial". Come hunt with me and the hound as much as you want, but once it leaves me, I can't control what you do with it, what you expose it to, and how you choose to correct them.

Single them out, switch them off the slicks, make them finish the tracks.

I totally disagree with shockers

Let the dog he will figure it out put him up until corn comes out and work him hard by his self no other dogs its the wrong time of the year to be training a green dog let him muturr a little turn cage coons out don't show him nothing at all get him on hot tracks Don't let him no its a cage involved at all when u do this enough and he still slick trees beat him and cut him loose at the tree u got him off of look around the coon may be close make him figure it out on his own

Thanks for all the advice- most all my pups out of Ike , tree b4 they run tracks, always here people saying they r afraid his pups are going to b tight mouth, but at least when they tree they have a coon, this pup is doing everything I am use to but he trees slick which I am not use to , 1 of my other pups who is 2 months younger is winning hunts , treed by his self with a coon , I guess this one is just a little too tree happy . Does no good to hunt him with another dog because he stays by his self .
