I believe horse meat was outlawed in dog food in the 1970's.

What do they do with the meat from a horse slaughter house if they don't put it in feed?

Do not believe what you read on your dog food bag. A good friend of mine is a manager for a fur buying company. I asked him what they do with all of their carcasses. He told me the rendering truck comes and picks them up for free. I can quarantee you that the rendering truck does not come and get them from out of state for free out of the goodness of their hearts. They are making money grinding those rotten carcasses into animal feed. I love the dog food bags with pretty arranged picture of fresh chicken, and grains, and vegetables on them. In reality the ones that actually do have some real chicken in them a whole bunch of that comes from egg laying, or meat raisi g chicken houses death piles. Trust me the rendering truck doesn't come every day and most of those chickens aren't so fresh.

Oh and yes thank God some horse slaughter plants are getting opened again. As far as where the meat from them goes a lot of it goes to Mexico and I am sure that a lot more than a guy would think makes its way into animal food.

I ride and train Tennessee Walking Horses and am so glad the slaughter houses are back in business. Horse prices should begin to go up and I am thankful cause right now it costs more to feed a horse for a month than it does to buy the horse!!!

Don't know about south dakota but here in michigan the renderings from the slaughter plants in detroit went to a P&G plant = proctor and gambel to be used in perfume products LOL It didn't end up in dogfood.

As a former horse professional... people would expect me to be anti slaughter...BUT, I"m NOT! As long as it's as humane as it can be... Slaughter is a WHOLE lot better than watching horses ROT in someone's back yard cause they can't afford to feed them...
AND... we DO eat cows and lambs and pigs etc.... I see nothing wrong with horses used for meat. I personally don't want to eat horse...or dog or cat... but I sure would if I HAD to and... don't mind if someone else wants to eat it.
I DO have a problem with horse STOLEN for meat.... just as I have a problem with DOGS stolen for ANY reason too! That is a whole nuther story.....

Good News! HappyHunting Heather

PS... My hubby had a horse back in the day...who was "saved" from slaughter, when a keen eye spotted an athlete and he was named..... "SirLoin" lol... he was a good one according to Bob...but his NAME was a Great One!

Every horse professional I have ever talked to was in favor of horse slaughter.

I agree Jim. I was against it myself until one of my equine science professors in college opened my eyes to a different stand on the matter. I figure the process as a whole will be a LOT more humane here in the U.S. than it is in Mexico, and with the condition I'm seeing some horses for sale in these days a humane end at the slaughterhouse would really be saving them from the life they're living right now. Not something I like to think too much about, but it's a necessary evil.

When I was a kid we lived in the Netherlands. Horse meat was less expensive than the good beef that was available and much better than most of the beef that was sold. We had it once in a while and it is pretty tasty, much more tender than an old dried up milk cow! I've also been on top of a few horses I would have liked to throw on the grill at the end of the day LOL!

While we're on the subject of slaughter animals and there uses. And I'll most likely catch some flack on this. But what about the thousands of dogs and cats that are put to sleep daily in our cities nationwide? What are they used for? I'm sure they could be beneficial as a means of feed. I'm against seeing animals suffer as many of you have stated. And when our animals are so out of control that even the humane society know what to do with them we have a problem. If dogs and cats were the size of horses and gitting hit in the roads people would control there breeding more. If their strays and no one claims in seven days, load them up and ship um to the processing plant. Why waste millions daily on animal care for 30 days and the animal not get placed in a home. I'd like to see these animals placed in a home. But ni
ot at tax payers expense.

i used to take loads to dads dog food. you dont want to get near the rot inside or be anywhere near where you dump it. i suppose they label that animal by product

I think you are mistaken, that orange hair you find on your General Tso chicken is from a rare breed of chinese chicken. LOL!
