i was very lucky in having someone help me learn the rules when i started and also my very first hound was the best hound i ever went to the woods with.... we practiced hunt every night for a month before i ever entered one... first hunt was a first place win and 11 hunts later i had a gr nite and had been in my first world hunt..... this was all in 1986 and 87..... way way more dogs to compete with back then but i dont think they were any better for the most part... also want to add this dog was bought at 15 months old and had never saw a coon when i got her... at one time i turned her loose 256 nights in a row according to my wifes divorce attorney and he could have very welll been right... she never came in heat until she was 5 years old and was dead at 7... been trying ever since to find something that was good as her

I have been huntin for about 4 yrs. Last summer I hunted a buddies dog in a PKC hunt and took the whoopin of a lifetime. Never entered another hunt until a couple weeks ago, my dog treed the only coon we seen and still lost. LMAO!! The next weekend I entered an RQE and won high scoring dog with 625+. Comp huntin is fun, I just enjoy pleasure huntin a bit more. I will admit with having a first place on him I kinda have the itch to see if I can make him a NITECH. He definitely has the tools just not sure if I do!! Lol

Won my first cast with a dog a really nice guy that I bought my first pup from let me hunt. It was my pups sire. He let me come get him anytime I wanted to hunt and help me learn. That guy has had English dogs for years. Eddie Epps is his name. Really good man. He's owned a lot of dogs that Erwin Massengill has owned and hunted

I got pretty lucky and won the first two hunts I was in but I just practiced and knew the rules and that's what won it for me. It won't take long and you'll win somehow.

Thats how it's suppose to be done not by cheating or slick handling lol.I won my first cast I was ever in and had only hunted him 3 times before then with my Rock dog and didn't even know the rules. He opened up to the right of us and I said I think that was my dog and everybody said it wasnt theirs so I struck him and he got treed by himself,he done that twice that night. Not bad for a dog that was gave to me and had never been in a hunt.Though I suggest you know the rules inside and out and your dog too before going to a hunt.

Technically the dog i was hunting won the cast the first hunt i ever entered.....came out tied.....the cast knew it was my first hunt...they lied to me on how to break the ties...young n dumb, i took their word on it...next morning i read the score card on a funny feeling...sure enough we shoulda won!

I ran that grand nite in a few other hunts...rqes mostly...learned the ropes...dont think i ever did get a win with him..

After that i hunted a dog in the registered cast...put the first on her pretty easy...and won a decent number of casts and hunts with her...took me a few years to grand her out..but i only got to hunt her march-may and last year she was pregnant so i laid her up after winning 2 rqe casts and qualifying at the 2nd..

This spring she took first at an rqe and that granded her....i was pretty dang happy...

Now i got my own pup...we'll be ready for the hunts this fall...spring at the latest...but as long as he dont forget nothin the next few months he will be ready...

Learning the ropes as a handler can be tough and frustrating...i cant tell you how many hunts ive entered now...i finally feel like i can hold my own as a handler on a good cast...rough casts ive been threatened to be scratched for speaking out and speaking the truth....i feel i have a reputation of being fair and not taking no BS and letting the dog im running do the winning...i dont win hunts...the dog does..im just there to try to make sure the rightfully win or loose....i dont want a win on a dog that it didnt rightfully win....
