rules,rules,rules...

I THOUGHT I knew the rules and intrepretations. But I am half through the advisor and reading and rereading the rules...and good night I'm confused. Maybe I'm making it more difficult than it should be. But what I think is commen sense does not play out (according the advisor) 90% of the time.
Don't get wrong..I'm not knocking UKC or the rules. I knoiw we have got to have 'em and have to follow them.
But man, it's confusing! I'm entering hunts this summer with my young hound and I do not want to be the one who gets him beat.
Any advice? How did you "experts" learn the rules?

I am not a expert but have found the best way is to go to the hunts and learn the hard way.

the best thing is to get a scorecard at the next hunt you go to and take it home and read it and read it and read it again . This coupled with the advisor will teach you the rules ,now all you have to do is make sure they are applied correctly when you are in a hunt . I have been at this game for about 45 years and I am still not an expert.

Its like driving a car. Ya gota do it to learn it. Also a good thing is to spectate a few casts. That helps a bunch.

I keep the advisor in my truck at all times now so when I go to a hunt and a question comes up I can reference it. I am absolutely amazed at how many times I have seen a master of hounds make a ruling that directly contradicts what is in the advisor, e.g. I was in a nite ch cast and three of us voted to scratch a guys dog for running a deer. The master of hounds told us we had to see the deer to do it but the advisor says we don't. It was very obvious what the dog was doing not one other dog in the cast said booo while that guys dog ran through about 2 1/2 sections in about ten minutes. We had to call time out and chase him down in a truck because he had done run through about two different places where the guide didn't have permission and was headed into some more.

For every rule you think you understand, there is another person that read the same rule and interprets it completely different in the woods. If I had a kennel club we'd get straight to the point. Go out during kill season and bring back some coons with your dogs. The deadline is sunrise and the most coons wins. The end.

soon there would be no club, due to there being no coons. simple fact. Georgia can't support the "meat hunt" theory with its current coon population.

Well last year I really got into it with a dumb moh which is quite frequent around my parts I feel moh test should aparently be harder and more often but we had a vote on a tree two said plus two said minus and the judge was one vote minus so he had the I'm the judge my vote counts more attitude and the funny thing is Allen just went over scoring scenarios and I asked the dumb moh if he reads the bloodlines abd he said no don't get them. Anyways after that night I started tearing allens page out of the bloodlines and put them in my dog box lol

Dont hold a hunt very often. Do it just every now and then. And besides that. I been hunting with a lot of dogs in my life. Very, very few people that talk about how great their dogs are actually own dogs that tree real live coons on a regular basis. The truth comes out when you go to the woods. Hauling back den trees, squirrel nests, and tree knots dont count as coons.

i was being sarcastic. more than one coon in a tree, spotlighted coon, and road kill would all be coon your dog didn't tree but would still be hauled in "for a win".

Go to staples with a score card and make copies. Then when you pleasure hunt call your dog and keep score. It is the only way. Knowing the rules at home and useing them in the field I have found is 2 differant things.

As it stands I'm told the Advisor is a good thing but I believe a rule book should be clear & precise enough not to need an explanation of what it says from another book. If it isn't it should be cleaned up and rewrote until it is. If not it isn't " THE RULE BOOK ".

A little clarification may always be needed but not a whole book of it.

Right on

Okie has it right you need to use the rules all the time. That is why I always tie my dog back wait 5min before I go in you and your dog needs to get used to this every hunt is a comp.hunt if you want to win them that is how you train your self and the dog.

And he say"Peace, Be Still " and a Cracker yet run his Mout, den chunk him in the cloak room. LOL For bein in contempt of MOH court.
