playing with the hounds

anyone have any hounds that do odd things such as play fetch or anything? I just found out that Jake LOVES Frisbee, it's funny to watch his ears flop.

I had one here that we had house trained, he would play fetch, swim in the pool with the kids and even caught him on the trampoline with our son a few times. He was the nicest pups we ever trained. Got killed crossing a road one night and haven't had the heart to try and replace him.

The kids seem to love him, Ron's little girl, who is 8, was "sick" from eating to much ice cream a week and a half ago and she begged to have Jake sleep with her. All our dogs are house broken cuz i tend to get have a huge bond with my dogs, so we just put a gate up in her doorway so i didnt have to worry about garbage or something dumb. He slept with her all night and felt wonderful the next day... all thanks to jake lol

My English dog retrieves a duck dummy. He loves it. My first hound, a redbone would launch off the dock and retrieve a stick. They are fun to watch

I had a redbone that would chase a ball, i had to keep her on a leash cuz she wasnt smart enough to bring it back but i thought it was a rare trait? Guess i was wrong.

Next question.
Would you guys that have those smart ones, that can learn sit stay come roll over and so on, rather have a world champion or your smart one that can tree coon too? Because of having a family and such, if they dont learn, they dont stay. Ive gone through prolly 20 pups or young dogs in the last 2 years or less but some didnt stay more than a few weeks cuz they were JUST DUMB, one left cuz i dont have the time but the rest left cuz they werent as inteligent as id like.

How do you guys feel about that?

I have an invisible fence in the back yard. My dogs stay in the kennel when I am not home but I turn the loose when I am. When they are out I constantly play throw the coon drag ( a real hide) and my female will bring it back to me. My male will sit, lay down on command. I do not leash him even hunting unless I go to a nite hunt. If a dog does not listen I do not need it.

I have had so many people's jaw drop when I had my Pabst dog, or his mother, neither one EVER had a leash (sept the 2 time Ash was in a nite hunt) and BOTH knew what a coon was, Pabst was only like 18 months when he died but he will be hard to replace.

I was out on a night hunt around this time last year, the rain poured down and right at the end of the hunt my dog was tree'd and I knew it, but I couldnt tell WHERE she was so I didnt tree her. later we found her (with the only coon we saw that night), i leashed her up and 10 feet later i dropped the leash and let her walk herself, keeping an eye on her thought, and both the guys were like "your not afraid she'll run off?" i just said "nope, she knows better." she was a heck of a dog.

Jake needs a leash cuz that coon is up the tree and so that is where he must stay lol he tree'd on in the yard yesterday and I could call him off that one but that's not normal.

we also have a wireless fence, and mine stay loose all the time.

I also had a guy comment this past weekend at a water race how calm and well mannered he was, Jake just sat there and barked, when he stood up, I told him to sit back down, it wasnt his turn yet. he sat down with a loose leash and waited... he never shut up but what can you expect?

I dont think I will EVER own a hound that needs a leash more time than not, ever again because its such a pain.

Lizz and others

It is evident that you all spend a lot of time with your hounds. Hounds are far smarter than they get credit for if trained especially from young age. Do you have a lot of water racing in wisconsin and drags? Used to Field trial hound / greyhound crosses up there a lot in the 1980's. Harrison illinois went they many times. Last time was 2006 I believe and swim pond was in disrepair. used to be a really big deal back in the day swimming under the lights.

Take care all, Jeff A.

My male is a complete different dog on the leash. He pulls he doesn't listen, I end up fighting and switching him more then enjoying leading him. You can either drop the leash or un snap him and he will stay by your side and if he does wonder all I have to do is tell him to get back here. He knows if he is leashed what that click means when he is unsnapped and stays excited about it.
Yes hounds are very intelligiant dogs just for years people have used them as only "hunting" dogs. I turn mine out every evening in that yard and and I just sit and watch them.
My female is a little hard headed but she is coming along good on the listening part.

i have a 7yr old been in the house since she was 4 weeks old. she fetches wether you throw something in the yard or in the water. she sits lys shakes says please and i love you. she boxes (stands up on hind feet and throws her paws around) and loves ice cream. she goes camping with us and dont mess with nothing unless someone drops a hot dog lol. absolutely loves a car ride.
she has a 1st on her and has had more coon than most dogs i have ever seen. no leash needed to get her off a tree just say come on and thats what she does. she will surely be missed when she leaves this world

answer your question is yes i'd rather have one that has some brains tends to make a better companion than one that knows one trick. and for breeding i got to thinking that i needed to know what kind of inteligence and mental competence a hound has. i beleive if i paid 2k and up for a hound it needs todo more that just tree coons. it should have more that just one trick up its sleeve. people especially comp hunters base their breeding just plainly on how the dog hunts. to put it simple i just wanna better the breed for my kids an have them hunting a dog that isn't an idiot.

i also had a redtick that wouldn't even look at a coon in the cage or bark at it but you turn him loose and he'd tree coons all nite. thought that was strange. you could talk to the dog like he was someone and if he knew you couldn't get to him he'd come to you and tree. very smart dog.

I have a male who loves to play fetch. He will have me throw a ball for hours. Loves to chase sticks into the lake and swim. I keep a Kong in his kennel and he plays with that all day.

My 2 1/2 year old niece was over the other day and I had ol Brisco out being a porch dog. She managed to get a leash on him and was happily pulling him around. She came up to me and was telling me (in todderese) he didn't know how to sit. Brisco is 10 years old and I used to pack him around quit a bit when he was a pup. I put him through his paces. Sit- Down- Roll Over- Sit- Shake. She thought it was the funniest thing she'd ever seen. He was less amused since I haven't made him do his "tricks" in about 8 years LOL.

I don't teach tricks to any of my hounds anymore but I do spend a lot of time playing with them. I've had someone comment one time about how my hounds are always watching me at the house. I spend a lot of time with them and they all act like a bunch of cowdogs around me. They listen great. Its nice to be able to take them somewhere and open the tailgate and tell them "stay here" and have them tag around at my heels.
