My friend Roscoe

With the exception of April 5, 2010 (the night we tried to rescue the guys in the UBB Mine explosion here in WV) last night was the worst night of my 44 year life. Let me start by saying that I was out of Coon hunting for several years until last year when my 12 year old son took interest in it. When I got back into it I did'nt want a big running dog or a compitition dog all we needed was a close hunting dog that we could go above the house and maybe tree a coon or two and come home. I looked long and hard before I finally found a Redbone hound named Ol Roscoe. Now Roscoe was not just your average dog he became part of our family. He brought my family closer together. When my Wife got to know Roscoe she started going hunting with us and really enjoyed being out with us. Roscoe was house broke and could also do several tricks too. Well, last night after we got done watching WWE wrestling we thought we would go out for a hour or so and let Ol Roscoe hunt a little while. Roscoe hit a track as soon as I turned him out and ran it about 30 minutes when he treed. When he treed he did"nt sound just right so we hurried on down to him to see what was going on. When we got to him I saw one of most gut wrenching things that I have ever seen. Roscoe was about 100 feet in the air. The Coon had walked up a leaning tree and Roscoe went up after him. I had no idea what to do. He was just barely hanging on. I sent my son back to the truck to get some rope I carry in the dog box. When he got back with the rope I shinnied up the tree to try to get to him. I made to within about 10 feet of when he fell. I will NEVER forget the feeling I had watching him fall. After he fell my wife was the first one to get to him but he had broken his back and was busted up badly inside. We set there with Roscoe for a little while petting him and crying. I always carry a 45 pistol for Bears and Crack Heads. I sent my wife and son back to the truck and I did the hardest thing that I ever had to do. I had to end my friends suffering. I brought my wife and son home and me and my Dad went back to bring Roscoe home. At about 3:00am this morning me and Dad buried Ol Roscoe close to his kennel under a Pine tree. I hope there will be a Red fern grow there someday. My GrandPa always said that a man will always get one dog in his lifetime that is truely a great dog. I think God that Roscoe was mine. Thanks for reading.

i've seen old people die, even relatives. i never seen a young people struggle and die so i don't know what that is like. but seeing old relatives die didn't compare to how bad it was putting my dog down. whorst expericne of my life. it's hard to imagine how awful it must have been to see a dog fall like that.

so sorry for your loss, It reminds me of how quick something can go wrong, I grew up with a walker that just died a few years ago, I was only three when he was born but as i grew up old Buster was always there, you grow so attached to some dogs, when the winter came two years ago i was out feeding the dogs he started to get worse and i knew he was going to die, so i sat with him cried and kept petting him saying goodbye... he died the next morning.. he was fourteen years old. I still miss him very much! But the memories that you make with your hounds are very important!!
