GPS vs. TELEMETRY

I'm sure there's already a discussion on this but I haven't found it. Just wanting some input on the good, bad, and ugly between the two. I been using a wildlife materials system for 15 years now and I know what these will do and how easy they are to use. Just want to hear some input on how the Gps may be better. And what brands are best. Thanks and God bless.

I would not go hunting if i didn't have my gps. The old style seems to track a lot farther for me but the benefits of the gps are well worth it. You can tell if there is a road near your dog, if he's treed, where exactly he is, the exact distance from you and its easier to tell when they are running trash. I run both collars that way if he gets to far for the gps to track him i just pull out the beep beep.

i hunt and live in a very mountinous place and i have gotten 1.2 miles before. On the flat ground im sure you can get more. If you get a long range antenna you can get twice the range.

You will get 1-2 miles on the gps. Its nice to train pups but i dont trust or like mine. Keep what u have and wait. If i could go back i would have kept my beep beep. Let them work the bugs out first

Greatest training tool ever

You can watch the track on the screen and watch how they are hunting. Are they just hanging out, running a straight line down a road, or actually serious hunting. I train my dogs to come in when called and don't like for them to get more than 7-8 hundred yards without circling back. If they get too far out, I will call for them. I watch the screen and if they are not responding to my call, they get a text message. lol

I wouldnt trade ya 5 beep beeps for 1 Garmin.Ive had to send in my Wildlife in to get fixed for repairs also in the past. The only problem Ive seen is people getting the long range antennas to tight and breaking the coax on the garmins and the DC 40 collars arent as good as the 30,s besides that Garmin all the way.

Just recently got a Garmin and with limited experience I really like the dog screen with the arrow simply pointing to where the dog is versus waving the others around to determine the direction. Really haven't needed the the map screen yet and to this point consider the Birdseye a pain to deal with. I expected Birdseye to be much more like the maps on my Droid but it falls short of that, maybe because of the smaller screen. For me it could have less choices. Garmin is smaller to carry, faster to use and in most cases don't cost more to get started . Extra collars as usual add up in a hurry and you hear of problems but it seems in most cases to be user error which takes me back to simple as possible would be good for me but they work and I just try not to fiddle around with it too much.

Get a Garmin, I was a big critic too until i bought one. The only time i have lost signal was in a couple big deep hollers and most of the time around here you wont strike a coon any closer than 1000 yards.

Had to rely on the trusty ATS sytem last night. DC 30 had dead battery!!! That is what I hate the most about them is trying to keep them charged up.

I have a Garmin, and don't get me wrong I love it, and don't like to hunt without it. The Garmin's pro's out weighs the con's by a long shot. But the beep beeps are still very reliable, very little maintence and have very good range. We kept ours for back up, and still use it some.

Love my garmin but not near as reliable as the beep beep.. Anytime im away from home I use both..cant leave the garmin on in the hunts and have turned it on at the end of a hunt with no clue where the dog is or went..beep beep always finds them..but the garmin tells me how far from the road and which side of rivers, ridges and other obstacles they are on..and when you are at a hunt and have an hour to round your dog up and get to the meeting place the garmin is priceless..

All that being said..it is not near as reliable..had the same beep beep and two collars for over ten years with no issues.. I have been through 2 garmin hand helds and 4 collars in the last four years.. To me the convenience is worth the extra cost..and I am able to find my dog faster which in turn gets me more hunting time..

Now I know a few of the above comments is like saying something bad about Tim Tebow so Im sorry if my opinion upset anyone..lol

I thank each of you for your help I read each post and came to the conclusion I'm just gonna stick with my beep beep system. I don't travel around to different places to hunt and I know most of the property I hunt on so thanks. Oh and in my option telemetry is superior just like Tim Tebow, there both unstoppable. Ha ha.

I like my Garmin, but I hunt in pretty thick coon and usually load back up after treeing the first coon at any given drop and go to another drop, so my dogs don't usually get more than 1000 yds out at the most.

But...I was thinking, if we keep adding different collars to our dogs at the same time, we're going to have to start breeding for longer necks!! LOL!

Its pretty darn hilly here. Some steep places. I've saw the garmins get 4 miles here with truck mount ant. With regular ol ant. Usually get a mile to 1.5 miles. Usually! Not every time.. I still have my QT and marshal collars. Never use them anymore. If the gps quit or they stopped making them. Id have a nervous breakdown I might use a telemetry again IF THEY PAID ME TO.
