I was watching the persuit channel this morning and there where some guys hunting with some bird dogs on qail, iv always enjoyed watching a good bird dog do his thing as well as any other kind of sent hound, weather it is a blood hound, or a deer hound ! that is why i enjoy hunting in the mornings and late evenings you get to see your young dogs work and observe, just exactly what they are doing. Does any one else get as much of a kick out of this as i do ?

can't get any better than a couple of setters locked up on point on pats or woodcock. JMHO

yea gramps turned me on to birddogs with a couple of setters back when pheasants were the king of birds up here in michigan in the 60's LOL

i like to watch all kinds of Hounds and hunting dogs move and trail, some make it look hard and some make it look very simple

I can't bird hunt Too busy watching the dogs work to really care about shooting birds. I will not turn down a chance to go. Just get too wrapped up watching the dogs work. Do fine handling the dogs, lol, just get too mesmerized watching the dogs work.

I am a total working dog nut. Doesn't matter to me what it is. Bite sports, tracking, upland bird, water dogs, herding, weight pull, dock diving, police k9, scent detection, etc. I have always been and will always be amazed by what a working dog can do. I can watch and work dogs all day, every day.

I've been like this my whole life, which is probably why I became a behaviorist/trainer/instructor. To some of my friends watching dogs work is like watching paint dry if there is not speed and action. I greatly appreciate it ALL.

thats why i got 5 blueticks a german shorthair for birds and a blackmouth cur for squirrels i can follow dogs 24/7

training my current pup really brought this very subject to light for me...

ive worked with young dogs and hunted young dogs in the past but never 100% and i guess because i wasnt doing 100% of the training i wasnt paying close attention...and i was younger...

and i hunted behind plenty of older dogs that just go hunting and you dont see them again till they are locked to a tree..

but while working my pup i really got to watch him hunt and see him work tracks...i found it amazing...also found it amazing to see where the coon actually goes...i swear they walk on every log they can..i honestly think they might sit there like a squirrel does to eat..my pup often times got REAL excited like there was more scent on that log than on the ground...i guess most logs have coon scat on them too...

also amazed me how much instinct a dog is born with...tree tops, creeks, etc that the dog came too, he just knew to get to the other side to pick up that track again..


ive seen beagles, bird dogs, deer dogs and bear hounds hunt...as well as coon hounds....

dog huntin is deep in my bones...i love it all...i stick with owning and running coon dogs...but i wont pass up a chance to hunt with any other dogs!

the bear dogs REALLY impressed me...hunting (actually just training) in coastal NC...we got up and had breakfast and loaded a pack of 5 plotts..small plotts..wired HOT..fireballs..we drove sand roads through the lease looking for tracks in the road to cut the dogs on...every track we came to, the dogs barked on! were talking tracks that were likely several hours old! just amazing to me...if my coon dogs did that i'd be in the woods all nite and probably never see a tree!

did the same with the deer dogs...

awesome to listen to the bear and deer dogs work the scent trail till they jumped the bear or deer...100% change in voice and excitement...went from boo-hooing and occassional yips and bawls to a full blown out smokin hot race...

the dogs were all broke in the box and if they barked you could bet the farm that there was a track...

same with bird dogs and watching them "get birdy"


we as coon hunters and i guess big game and even beagle hunters often dont get to actually SEE the dogs work much...mostly all done with our ears..which is awesome in its own way...but seeing them is something else as well...

Yes , what Mausser said about guessing in the dark. I like daytime coon hunting and I can do it in the salt marsh and catch glimpses of the coon here and there. I also like the lighted glowsticks on the collars I had to extend up to four feet to see the dogs whereabouts above the taller grass at night. Sometimes I have watched a coon come across a pasture to a cornpile while deer hunting and pay real close attention which cow patties he came by and left from, get bored with deer hunting real quick and go home and get a dog and put him on it , and been embarrassed as heck how bad he could screw up an hour old track and been amaised when he fools around and gets the same track treed right. I know I can affor to put a glowstick on a marsh coon to know where he is. I look forward to the day I can put a bunch of Garminds on the coons to know where they are, where they are moving, when did they pass, and mostly is the dog on the right tree. I can't wait for the tecknology to catch up. The dog barks, i know where the dog is; I don't know where the coon is or how far ahead. There will be alot of prized dogs meeting their maker when people can visually see the coon or the SCREENE where the coon is instead of fantasizing in the dark. LOL.JMO.
